- Aug 4, 2014Hi Ian,Thanks for your message to the Group. It would certainly be advantageous to test someone from your Surname Line as that should map the SNPs specific to that line. As to what distance that person should be is difficult to say. Both a distant and a close relative would give the Surname branch SNPs but as to how far down that branch is the unknown question. This is for you to decide as it is an unknown quantity. The best scenario is to test one of each, a distant and a close relative. In my case it was a very distant Roberts and my own father and I. What came from that testing with Big Y and Full Genomes with analysis through YFull produced an SNP branch for our Roberts line with a sub-branch for my own Roberts branch of that Roberts line in the current genealogical time period. As for testing, FTDNA have reduced the price to $595. The coupons that applied during their Fathers Day sale are not valid now as far as I am aware. If your 8th cousin has not tested with FTDNA, you may also wish to consider testing him with Full Genomes. They now have a Y sequencing test at the same or similar price. It is performed in the USA and takes considerably less time (about 2 months) than their original Y sequencing test now called Y Elite. You can still have additional analysis performed with YFull on his BAM file if you wish so that both of you have your results on the same site or you can donate your BAM file link to Full Genomes so that can use your results as a reference when performing analysis on other samples or BAM file links.Hope this helps in some way. Others may have further comments or suggestions.Wayne----- Original Message -----From: laytonian73@... [I-M223]Sent: Monday, August 04, 2014 10:11 PMSubject: [I-M223] New BigY test?
I am considering ordering a new BigY test for an 8th cousin (with the earliest MRCA I can find: Thomas Layton b 1664). Is this the best way to go, or would later branches be of more interest?
I see that FTDNA have recently reduced the price of their BigY test $595. This is still pretty steep, so I wonder if you have a spare coupon that I might use (I gave you mine earlier)?
