Group Description

This group is dedicated to searching for information on HOWELL OWENS and his family. He was probably born in GA or SC somewhere around 1813.

I am now thinking Howell was married twice. I think his first wife was Elizabeth Sanderlin (Jacob Marion Owens' death certificate lists "Miss Sanderlin" as His mother). Howell and Elizabeth had the following children: Jane b. 1842, Susan b. 1845, William b. 1849 & Jacob Marion b. 1857. I cannot find any of these children, except Jacob, after the 1850 census.

I think Elizabeth died between 1857 & 1860 and Howell then married Harriet Hawkins somewhere around 1863 (Howell was discharged from the Confederate Army in Jul 1862). Howell and Harriet had the following children: Selina b. 1865, James W. b. 1867, Kate b. 1875 and Fredrick Thomas b. 1876.

I cannot find any information on Howell or Harriet in the 1880 census. I found their children living with Archer and Rebecca Mitchell and they were listed as "adopted". Rebecca may have been related to Howell or Harriet.

1850 - US Census, Greenville Co, SC; Roll: M432_853; Page: 375; Image: 175, dwelling, shows: Howell Owens 28, Elizabeth (maiden name may be Sanderlin) Owens 25, Jane Owens 8, Susan Owens 5, William Owens 1. All show born in SC.

1860 - US Census, Greenville County, SC Pg. 343, dwelling 779, shows Howell Owens age 30, farmer, and Harriett age 15, housekeeper and Marion age 3. Howell listed his state of birth as Georgia. Harriett and Marion show SC. Note: This Harriet may be Harriet Hawkins daughter of Larkin Hawkins.

1870 - US Census, Township of Chick Springs, Greenville Co, SC Pg. 21/145/526, dwelling 157, shows Howell L. Owens, 57 (?), farmer and Harriett 23, housekeeper, Jacob M 12, Selina C. (F) age 6, and James W. age 3. All show they were born in SC.
