Group Description

Contrary to popular rumour, this IS NOT an "Anti-Horse-Racing Group." Members here are owners, trainers, breeders and other concerned people who love horses and racing but realize there are problems and want to make the industry safer for the horses. This group was inspired by the tragic death of "Eight Belles. The goal here is not to put an end to the racing industry, but rather, concerns the underlying reasons for the fact that racehorse mortality rates have risen to all time highs at race tracks all across the continent. Experts claim that it is a many faceted problem and opinions differ and vary from too much in-breeding, bad breeding (bad-feet and/or bones,) track conditions (too hard and/or soft) steroid use, nutrition, mixing of mares with stallions or geldings, over-crowded "fields" (too many horses in one race) to running them, riding them or starting them too soon or pushing them too hard.Hopefully, by open and honest inquiry & discussion we can identify some of the root causes of these apparently systemic problems and come up with some possilbe solutions.

The ultimate goal of this group is to hold industry personell more accountable for policy (or lack thereof) as relates to the care, safety and welfare of the horses, both working and "retired." We also want an explaination as to why the disproportunate number of x-race horses being sent off to slaughter today. Studies show that 34% of all race horses in America end up slaughtered and sliced into steaks and shipped to Europe where horsemeat is considered a delicacy for human consumption.

Communication is the key here so we invite anyone interested in this topic to feel free to join and start posting . The group will be unmoderated but we ask you to keep it nice. Its nice to be nice, dont you think?

Be sure to see the groups "related" link located at the bottom of the homepage for a look at our Horse Racing Hall of Shame website.
