Group Description

On HistoricKnit we discuss the history of knitting and knitted items. We also analyze old pieces, re-create patterns, look for knitting in art, solve technical problems, locate tools and other resources, and create new pieces inspired by old knitting. Also welcome are discussions of embellishments like embroidery, beading, and other methods, as well as related techniques like nalbinding, sprang, and even crochet.

For the purposes of this list, I consider historic knitting to be from any time prior to 50 years before now.

Everyone is welcome who is interested in historic knitting. Many members are in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) with its focus on pre-1601. And there are re-creators of other periods, such as American Civil War and World Wars I and II. But you don't have to be a re-creator to join in.

I welcome reminiscences about knitting by older relatives and community members or about regional knitting traditions. These are part of history. You are part of knitting history.
