Group Description

Although it is unlike those devices imagined by generations of science-fiction authors, a time machine exists. While it cannot hurl us bodily into the past (nor, for that matter, into the future), it nonetheless can recreate the sights and sounds of a long-ago era. The time machine is the movies.

Unfortunately, it has its limitations. Films must appeal to a mass audience, and their large budgets mean that they must entertain. This means that costumes, the personalities and the plots all tend either to conjure up the stereotypes of the era or to attempt to mold the wearer into the confines of contemporary concepts and perceptions. Still, as the late Norman Cantor noted, "Films are not a substitute for history books, but films can evoke the ambience and sensibility, as well as the visual locus of [a time period], not only in a supplementary reinforcing and entertaining way, but sometimes in a distinctly perceptive and persuasive way."

This is a mailing list for people who like historic films, who like discussing historic films and who care about the accuracy of such films. If you are intrested in films portraying any era--from the Stone Age to the 1960s--please join us!
