RE: TAMIL NESAN REPORT DATED 14TH JUNE 2007
STATEMENT BY SELANGOR HINDU SANGAM CHAIRMAN GANESAN THANGAVELU A BLATANT LIE AND CAREFULLY CALCULATED TO MISLEAD MALAYSIAN PUBLIC.
Tamil Nesan daily reported yesterday quoting Selangor Hindu Sangam Chairman Ganesan Thangavelu as saying the following:
a) the demolition of Sri Kaliamman Muniswarar Temple at Section 7 Shah Alam (formerly known as Midlands Estate) on 13th June 2007
is legal and justified.
b) temple demolished by Developer on 13th June 2007 because Subramaniam (Temple Chairman) and his family rebuilt the said temple despite being demolished on 3 occasions previously by Shah Alam City Council.
c) Temple refused merge with another temple which was given 1 acre land
d) Developer refused to give alternative site to this temple as it was managed by a family.
HINDRAF strongly condemns the above statement by Selangor Hindu Sangam Chairman Ganesan Thangavelu which is a blatant lie and carefully calculated to mislead the Malaysian public.
He should instead praise the courage and determination shown by this temple and its committee in rebuilding the temple with their own funds despite being demolished on 3 previous occasions.
We challenge the Hindu Sangam Chairman to show prove that this temple was ever given an option to merge with another temple on a 1 acre land specifically allocated as "Temple Reserve" by the developer/authorities. If he can't show prove within 5 days he should resign from his post and stop pretending to act for the Hindu Community.
This temple which is sitting in about an acre had existed during the colonial days more than 90 years ago on a piece of land on a rubber plantation estate known as Midlands Estate where Indian migrant workers were brought in to toil the land for the then Malaya's economic growth.
We have previously warned the Malaysia Hindu Sangam National Chairman to stop misleading the Malaysian public on the same issue. If the Hindu Sangam cant solve the problem the least they should do is "shut up" instead of making statements representing/justifying illegal actions by developers and the Government/authorities.
What is the basis of Hindu Sangam claiming the action by the Developer demolishing this 90 year old temple "legal"?? What is legal and illegal is a matter for the Law Courts of the Land to decide and not Hindu Sangam or the developers or the Government. It has been a norm lately for these irresponsible Government proxies and the Government authorities to unilaterally declare places of worship belonging to Hindus illegal and its demolition legal.
It is crystal clear the Malaysia Hindu Sangam which claims to represent the Hindu Community has failed in its duty and is continuously misleading Malaysian Hindus. We wonder why the State Chairman is issuing a statement justifying the unlawful acts committed by the Developer who engaged the "services" of the Royal Malaysian Police Force and gangsters to effect the demolition.
We once again warn the Government that if these trends continue the harmony and mutual respect between different religious groups in Malaysia is in serious danger. Minority religious groups should be given funds and land for purposes of worship but the Government has failed miserably. 50 years of independence has brought tremendous misery and unnecessary anxiety among the Hindu population in Malaysia. Thousands of their Temples are in threat of demolition and the Government is deliberately refusing to address the issue. Their ancient places of worships are ruthlessly demolished by the Government and its agencies without options for relocation. To justify their unconstitutional actions these temples are unilaterally declared illegal by Government and their proxies like the Malaysia Hindu Sangam are called in to justify, pacify and mislead the community.
