RE: MALAYSIA NANBAN 14TH JULY 2006
SAMY VELU QUOTED AS SAYING:
- HINDU TEMPLES ARE DEMOLISHED BECAUSE THEY ARE BUILT INDISCRIMINATELY OF LATE.
- HINDU TEMPLES NOT BUILT ACCORDING TO AGAMAS- THEREFORE WE ARE THE CAUSE OF THOSE DEMOLISHMENTS
- TEMPLES BUILT SINCE I WAS DEPUTY HOUSING AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT MINISTER HAVE INCREASED FROM 17,760 TO ABOUT 20,000. THESE TEMPLES SHOULD BE PREVENTEDâ¦.THERE IS NOTHING ANYONE COULD DO IF THEY ARE DEMOLISHED.
- ENOUGH TEMPLES FOR HINDUS IN THIS COUNTRY
Hindraf expresses its deepest regret to the Statement made by the only HINDU MINISTER outside India who had expressed concern and objections to the fact that over the last 26 years Hindu Temples have increased from 17,000 to about 20,000. What the Minister failed to realize is that over the last 26 years the Hindu population have increased by about 80% whereas the increase in temples proportionate to the community need was only 17%. Hundreds of thousands of Hindus have left the rubber estates which have been acquired mostly for development purposes and have moved into new townships and housing areas. But the Government ie the Housing and Local Government Ministry have failed to provide for places of worship for them in these new townships. It is the paramount duty of the Government of the day to provide for the spiritual needs of the people.
The Government have failed the Hindu Community in not providing for their spiritual needs. After all Hindus too subscribe to the fundamental tenets of RUKUNEGARA- FAITH IN GOD. But what have the Government done for almost 50 years of Independence of the Country?
When local Councils approved new townships, allocations are made for recreational facilities, and mosques for muslims. These are healthy developments which should be encouraged. But why have the Government and Local Councils neglected allocations for places of worships for Hindus. Not a single Hindu temple have been built fully founded, in terms of allocation of land and funds to built it since Merdeka.(Independence)
This is a blatant failure on the part of Government. The Hindu Minister seem to be complaining on the increase of about 3,000 temples over the last 26 years. So what? Perhaps he should also take count of how many mosques and madrasahâs were built over the last 26 years. Arenât these not healthy development. The Minister further lamented while the Hindus formed 1.7 million of the population there is no need to have 1.7 million temples and places of worship. The Minister appears to be losing sight of reality. The Hindus never requested for 1.7 million places of worship. This is clearly a most unwarranted statement by the Minister. What is the hidden agenda in making this most irresponsible statement?
If there is any increase in toddy shops, gambling dens, prostitution centres by Hindus, perhaps the Ministerâs complaint would be justified. But why worry on a healthy development. The total Hindu population has increased by about 80% since then and the country is developing at a great speed. Why shouldnât spiritual development increase in tandem??
If the government takes the view that the temples are built indiscriminately (of late), then as the National Planning Chairman the Prime Minister must immediately instruct his Government and Local Councils for the proper building of these temples ie proper National Planning and allocation of suitable sites and funds. The government have clearly failed on this.
Dato Samy Vellu is clearly misleading the Malaysian public by saying that the nearly 3000 temples built â indiscriminatelyâ over the last 26 years are the ones demolished by the authorities. We have our facts and figure correct. I challenge Dato Samy Vellu to show prove that the 25 temples demolished/threatened with demolishment orders/torched etc over the past 4 ½ months were within the âcategoryâ he claimed. (ie built over the last 26 years). I also challenge him to give the correct figures of the temples which have been gazetted from the 17,760 temples that he claims to have existed when he did the survey more than 26 years ago as the ex Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister. If he canât prove and give those figures then he shouldnât claim to represent the Malaysian Hindu Community. We wonder why isnât the Government taking positive steps to gazette and issue land titles to at least the 17,760 temples mentioned by the Minister.
Those temples currently subjected to indiscriminate demolishment are places of worship that existed prior to Independence. Some of those places maybe in the path of proposed development. Even so precaution must be taken by the relevant departments at the stage of Planning and Development. There is always room to realign development. However most Ministries do not adhere to those entrenched guidelines but instead enforce their rights upon those who are less powerful, thus compromising their rights. However the Minister is clearly diverting from the real main issue and misleading the public by justifying the demolishment on grounds they are ânewâ and on the way of development.
HINDRAF has been and would continuously voice out the atrocities and acrimony committed by Government administrators particularly in the alarming âcleansingâ of Hindu Temples and terming places of worship âillegalâ by irresponsible Government officers. We do not blame MIC for the Governmentâs failure. We put the whole blame and responsibility on the GOVERNMENT directly. The Minister should stop blaming the Hindu community when the Government has failed in its paramount duty to the people. Thousands of temples which were in existence up to 150 years ago have been either demolished or threatened with demolishment by the Government. The most practical solution for the Minister is to procure the Government to immediately Gazette the existing about 20000 Hindu temples and issue them with land titles. If he cant do this he should say so instead of blaming Hindus.
The unlawful acts of the City Halls, Local Councils and District Land Offices ect are crystal clear. These temples have right to exist by virtue of the provisions contained in the Federal Constitution. So please donât mislead the people and divert from the real issue.
