Group Description

Sometimes a doily is just a doily... NOT! ;-) But seriously, oftentimes the so-called "doily" or "tablecloth" is begging to become a shawl, baby blanket, beret/pillow cover/purse... you get the idea. Whether or not you do get the idea, this group is for the exploration of "as is" and "what they want to be", lace knitted covers, specifically relating to the designs of Herbert Niebling, and occasionally me... If you just want to receive notices of the sale of my latest recharts* of various Niebling patterns, then select to receive only "Special Notices". Otherwise select the Daily Digest or Individual messages. Also, members will be encouraged to post pictures of their Niebling "metamorphoses", as well as post tips about yarn used and experiences with knitting them.

The photo for the group (for now) is of a baby blanket adapted from a Niebling tablecloth found in a Dutch language publication. The tablecloth was composed of several square motifs sewn together around a rectangular center worked in stockinette stitch with purl ridges. (Will post a scan of it somewhere...). In addition, am currently working on another blanket with the same flower motif but with a hexagonal/honeycomb mesh background, and perhaps a border. A different border will also be added to the blanket in the photo... Finally, will probably move the photos from my other group for Niebling adaptations to cardigans (Manifold Cardigans Project).

*Note that the recharts do not violate copyrights because (1) they are not scans of the original charts; (2) there are other differences among the layouts, i.e., the spacing between the symbols is different; (3) multiple consecutive "knit 1" symbols are replaced by numbers; and (4) some of the patterns also are written out (using software I wrote - for more details, visit "http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KnittingChartMaker_ExcelTemplate/?yguid=66028917").
