Group Description

Legacy of cannoneers of 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery.
The 5th Field Artillery was constituted as part of the Regular Army in January 1907, although the First Battalion's lineage dates back to the Revolutionary War. Campaign streamers from the War of 1812, Indian Wars, Mexican War, and Civil War further attest to its long history. They also served in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection before being assigned to the 1st Division in 1917. From this war, the Regiment was awarded seven campaign streamers and received the French Croix De Guerres with Palm for action in Lorraine, Picardy, the Aisne-Marne and the Meuse-Argonne campaigns. In World War II, eight additional campaign streamers were added to the Regimental standard along with the French Croix De Guerres with Palm, French Medaille Militaire and Belgian Fourragere. During the conflict in Vietnam, the regiment earned eleven campaign streamers and was awarded two Meritorious Unit Commendations, Republic of Vietnam Crosses of Gallantry with Palm, and the Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Honor Medal. The Regiment continues today as the Division’s direct fire support.
