- Apr 1, 2016Infrared thermometers will only read accurately if the emissivity of the object is .95. Bare metals either shinny or dull will have a different emissivity and give the wrong reading. A dab of paint or a piece of tape will usually do the trick to get accurate readings. The paint or tape doesn't have to be black. Wiping on some oil or grease will also work, but is messy.
