Happy Birthday, HASA!
- Today is HASA's third birthday!
The perfect opportunity to take a look at what J.R.R. Tolkien had to
say about birthday customs in Middle-earth, and in this case, birthday
customs in the Shire.
I quote Letter #214, "To A.C. Nunn" (draft), [Not dated; probably late
1958 early 1959]:
"Receiving of gifts: this was an ancient ritual connected with
kinship. It was in origin a recognition of the byrding's membership of
a family or a clan, and a commemoration of his formal
'incorporation'. ( )
Giving of gifts: was a personal matter, not limited to kinship. It was
a form of 'thanksgiving', and taken as a recognition of services,
benefits and friendship shown, especially in the last year. ( )"
Today is HASA's birthday:
Time to think about what gifts HASA gives to us, and what gifts we can
give to HASA and to all our fellow HASAists.
Time to think back how it all began!
Log in at HASA and read the reflections, congratulations and thoughts
that HASA's very first members sent to us to celebrate HASA's third
birthday in the "Happy Birthday, HASA!"-announcement!
Time to celebrate!
Log in at HASA and join the party: post some birthday reflections of
your own or perhaps even a birthday drabble for our site at the "Happy

Congratulations: HASA Celebrates Fourth Anniversary
Four years ago, at the beginning of July 2002, HASA was launched. Since then it has become a thriving community of readers, writers and researchers, who explore the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien in many amazing and creative ways.
- Up to 500 members, and many more authors and visitors, enjoy the public and the member side of the Henneth Annûn Story Archive every day.
- After only four years 1,579 stories and 110 Challenges with even more stories are available in the public archive of HASA. On the member side you can find even more stories! The General Stories section offers a selection 1,594 stories, with an additional 682 in the Beta Stories section.
the Resources section character bios, timelines, entries about places
& things, research articles and a growing URL library provide
information and entertainment for our members.
- HASA has become much more than a simply online archive. It is a creative environment for readers, writers, beta-readers and researchers. Workshops, Playlists and Forums make sure that online life at HASA will never become boring. Weekly announcements and a monthly Challenges bulletin published on-site, in the HASA News Yahoo Group and the HASA LiveJournal Community, RSS-feeds and e-mail lists keep our members up to date.
...and all that has happened in only four short years!
We think that's more than reason enough for a party.
One of HASA's most wonderful traditions is that all members may ask for a drabble on their birthday in the HASA Birthday Cards Forum.
To celebrate HASA's fourth birthday, HASA asks for a drabble about your favourite character and the number four.
And here's already someone who wants to congratulate HASA:
July Challenges Bulletin
The July 2006 Challenges Bulletin is posted: here!
The Challenges Team asks all members to check out the Prospective Challenges forum: maybe there's a nuzgûl in there that has only been waiting for you!
And don't forget to ask for your birthday drabble! Post your request at the Birthday Cards Forum!
Also, don't forget to create a story for the birthday card workshop. This serves the same purpose as the old HAWriters story and lets others put drabbles they write in an easily accessible location. Enter this story in the challenge for July drabbles, so we have all of these in one place. (There are instructions on how to do all this at the top of each thread in the Birthday Cards Forum; if you need help just ask the Workshop Manager, Gwynnyd.)
