Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji kee fateh!
Uncle Jee had a serious accident at work nearly two years ago. He
fell over twenty feet while loading an airplane with the catering
trolleys. As he was plummetting through the rain towards the
reinforced concrete runway he thought `Game Over.'
He landed with a crash and heard the loud cracking of bones. Lying in
a pool of his own blood he looked across at his crushed left arm and
leg. He even sat up, but then the pain shot through his body. The
brain shut down certain areas and his arm and leg were effectively
At the hospital he heard the doctors and nurses talking, saying that
they would have to amupuate and that he would be wheelchair bound for
the rest of his life. A strong happy father of three, who worked
hard all his life and never even sat around on his days off, lost
hope and entered into depression.
The nurse was brilliant she spent a lot of time keeping Uncle Jee
positive. And she stressed to the family that they had to be
positive. She explained to them all that the hospital treatment
would not be worth anything if Uncle Jee didn't also believe 100%
that he was going to recover. He had to believe it in his core
that he would recover. So that's what they did, they played gurbani
tapes in the room. They were positive about his recovery. They even
went to the extent of not telling relatives and friends for a few
months, because they couldn't risk people coming in seeing Uncle and
being negative about his condition.
Uncle Jee said that the nurse told him that the mind is such a thing
that it needs to believe 100% without any doubts that the body will
get better. Its not even good enough to think `O maybe I'll get
better we'll see what happens." No the mind needs to believe it ,
truly believe it deep down. Then and only then will the brain start
making it come true.
And now nearly two years later Uncle Jee is still in a lot of pain
and gets down when he is left alone or awake at night, but he has
leanrt to walk a little and has limited use of his arm. Something
that unimaginable after his accident.
He said that he has had alot of time to read Sukhmani Sahib in great
depth and he has realised that everything is in God's hands.
Everything that happened to him, happened according to his karams
(past good and bad actions). As he has accepted it, he is able to
move on emotionally and treasure the current moment it is all bonus
time. His friend who had persuaded him to get that job still comes
around twice a month and deeply regrets persuading him to take the
job. But his friend also needs to understand it was not his fault
we all reap what we have sown apay beej apay he khao. The beauty
in all of this is that God is always there to soothe our pain, God is
there inside us the light of life deep within us. And sometimes we
are so caught up in the world around us that it takes pain to make us
realise that there is more to our existance than the accumulation of
wealth and family pride. Unable to run around left right and centre
in the rat race, Uncle Jee has had time to focus within. Something
most people never do their whole lives.
When he told me about having 100% belief, it reminded me of a verse
from gurbani where Guru Arjun Dev Ji says that in order to realise
the Lord, not even a single doubt can remain.
"When he entangles himself in emotional attachment,
he comes and goes in reincarnation, under the constant gaze of Death.
But when all his DOUBTS are removed,
then there is no difference between him and the Supreme Lord God.

Remember Bhai Lehna Ji's faith in his Satguru Ji. Just like us now,
everyone knew Guru Nanak's history, his divine revelations, the
turning of Mecca, the meeting with the Yogis, Hindu Saints and of
saving the murderer Sajaan Tug and the cannibal Kauda Rakhash. But
even knowing all that, as soon as the SatGuru acted like a mad man
ranting and raving, lashing out with his walking stick, throwing
money at people, everyone lost their faith.
When everyone else lost their faith in their beloved Satguru Ji,
only Bhai Lehna Ji remained true and was even prepared to eat a
corpse (which actually turned out to be karah prashad).
So lets all learn from Uncle Jee's experience. Lets not wait until
we lose a loved one, or have a life changing accident. No, lets
treasure the current moment. Just like Uncle Ji, lets truly
believe. Lets have unshakable belief that God who gave us life and
gave us the knowedge of Siri Guru Granth Sahib, also has given us the
potential to realise Him in this lifetime.
Yes, truly believe that there will be no difference between us and
the Supreme Lord in THIS LIFETIME. Have no doubts in God working
through the Satguru and God enlightening us through the Divine Word
SatNaam. Have no doubts that we will realise the Lord in THIS
LIFETIME with the Guru's grace.
