We have stumbled across a new plague and we need everyone's input on
this, so if you could spare a few minutes we would be grateful.
The plague in question is called Mistress-of-the-dragon. Here's the
link to her homepage at ff.net:
After reading one of her fics, `The Possession' and after perusing
her others I quickly discovered a drastic change in writing style
from one fic to the other, so I done a quick online search and found
the fic to be plagiarized. The fic is near enough a word by word
copy of another fic with the same title by a published author who
goes by the name of Jaid Black.
Me and Ree carried out a search to see if her other fics were
plagiarized and quickly discovered that stealing `The Possession'
was not her only offence.
One Night Stand: word by word copy of ONE NIGHT STAND in the TALES
FROM THE TEMPLE II anthology, by a published author who goes by the
name of J.C Wilder.
The plagiarists other fic, `Good Things Come From Bad Happenings,
was also taken from a published book called Conception cover-up by
Karen Lawton Barrett. The plagiarists admitted this fact herself in
the A/N at the beginning of the fic:
`Hey, I'm back with another story. I finished a book called "
Conception Cover-up " by Karen Lawton Barrett. I thought that is was
perfect as a fanfic story. I don't own anything. Please read and
review. i promise that it is better than the first story that I am
writing, which by the way it is not done yet. I will update it as
soon as I can think of something. This is an AU story.'
Whether or not it is a word for word copy we do not know because we
are unable to find an online chapter of the original story for
comparison. If anyone else has any luck finding one then let us know.
We also drew blanks on a net search for her other fic `The Reunion'
but due to the writing style of the fic we highly suspect that it is
in fact her own works, it was also the first story she published.
Normally we would notify the plagiarist, original author and ff.net
to try and get the stories removed, but the problems we are having
are this, the plagiarist has put in small disclaimers scattered
throughout the story, at the end of chapters, to say that the plot
At the end of chapter 6 she wrote:
`Disclaimer: I don't own anything about Harry Potter or the plot.
At the end of chapter 8 she wrote:
`Disclaimer: I own nothing about Harry Potter and the plot. The plot
belongs to Jaid Black'
One Night Stand:
At the end of chapter 5 she wrote:
`Disclaimer: I don't own any of Harry Potter. Also I don't own the
At the end of chapter 6 she wrote:
`Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter. I wish that I did own Draco
Malfoy. LOL. I don't even own the plot.'
At the end of chapter 7 she wrote:
`Disclaimer: I don't own any of Harry Potter or the plot. Harry
Potter belongs to JK Rowlings and the plot belongs to J.C. Wilder.
Maybe the aff.net crew can help us with this, or anyone with any
idea on the legality behind disclaimers for that matter. Do her
disclaimers constitute a viable means of being able to write the
story word for word and avoid being branded as a plagiarist?
This is just one of the headaches we are having due to this case.
Personally, after reading `The Possession', before I discovered that
it was plagiarized I had never realized that she had used someone
else's story because I had never noticed the disclaimers whilst
reading the fic. Neither have her reviewers for that matter, from
what I have read, she is continually being complimented for
producing such an original and well written fic *snort*.
The other problem we are having is do we contact the original
authors and let them know? Published authors might rightly kick up a
fuss and produce some bad publicity for fanfic authors, not to
mention the sites that they are published on. Then there's the fact
that they might take legal action, and well, where do we draw the
line? It's a remote possibility but the fact is its still there and
it could happen.
So, how do we proceed with this case? Tell her to put a disclaimer
in the beginning and let everyone clearly know that it is not her
work? Report her to ff.net, get the story removed and put her on the
blacklist? Inform the original authors?
Anyone got any ideas on this?
