Re: John Percy's history of the DSP
- I haven't read the published book but I scrutinised an earlier draft as indeed did many
other participants in the events who were SYA/SWL members at some stage during the
period under review in the volume. I was happy with the sections I was familiar with and
made some suggestions that may be included in the final draft.
Aside from chronicalling the early history of the DSP the draft I read also:
1. reviewed and referenced the issues in dispute with Bob Gould vs a vs Resistance
during the late sixties
2. analysed the melange that came together to form the Socialist Labor League(the
"Healyites') and its fellow travellers in the wake of the Resistance factional fight. This is
what Bob Gould now calls his" fit of party building".
I note that Bob doesn't challenge Percy's reading of the events that led to the creation
of the SLL franchise here . The book also goes a long way to explaining to later
generations why Bob Gould is so obsessed with the DSP and how he got into the retail
I think it is an important study of a period in Australian politics viewed from the POV of
the most successful of the New Left currents to survive from that period and is much
better than the anecdotally driven web histories of the ISO. I hope to be speaking at its
launch here in Brisbane.
Those who object to the book of course have the option of writing, publishing or
uploading their own.
