A SPECIAL END-OF-THE-YEAR TREAT FROM SBS

Here’s a treat worth having whatever you are celebrating. On

Wednesday 29 December at 10.00pm SBS is showing Divine Intervention (Yadon ilaheyya) a must-see for anyone interested in the Middle East conflict or who appreciates good cinema.

This is an artistic movie that makes one think of Jacques Tati and Antonioni rather than Abu Mazen and Barghouti. It is as far away from the stereotypes as you can get.

This is not a film to watch on your own – no, it is not scary. On the contrary, if anything it lacks action. What you need the friends for is to help piece together the giant jigsaw puzzle. The hidden messages the subtext take time to work out. To make it more difficult you have to first recognise the pieces. They are not neatly provided in a box. If you can get it, try to get Palestinian and Israeli friends to assist with some of the subtleties.

The kind of film that will get you talking may mean having a VCR or DVD recorder could be handy. You may want to see it again to pick up the bits you missed the first time. It took a group of friends with mixed backgrounds over an hour of talking to feel confident we understood this movie.

SBS may think Divine Intervention is from France. I think it’s Palestinian but one way or the other it’s a great movie with a message.
