- This March, celebrities, educators, health care providers, consumer
and animal advocates, and thousands of other caring people in a
thousand communities in all 50 states and several foreign countries
will hold colorful educational events. They will range from a
Congressional Reception and colorful 'lifestivals' to public dinners,
feeding of the homeless, cooking demonstrations, food samplings, and
simple information tables called 'steakouts.'
The occasion is the 18th annual observance of the Great American
Meatout, world's largest and oldest annual grassroots diet education
campaign. Visitors will be asked to pledge to kick the meat habit on
March 20, the first day of spring, and explore a wholesome,
nonviolent diet of grains, vegetables, and fruits.
Meatout draws massive support from consumer, environment, and animal
protection advocates, as well as from public officials, health care
providers, meatless food manufacturers and retailers, educators, mass
media, public officials, and celebrity entertainers. All believe that
consumers are entitled to a response to the relentless barrage of
meat industry propaganda in schools, in the media, and in the streets.
This year's headliners include Casey Kasem, Mary Tyler Moore, Bill
Maher, Jennie Garth, James Cromwell, Joaquin Phoenix, and Ed Asner.
Thirty governors and large city mayors are expected to issue
proclamations encouraging consumption of plant-based foods.
LET YOUR AIMS BE COMMON, and your hearts be of one accord, and all of
you be of one mind, so you may live well together.
