      A family Bible for this line dating from SARAH GILLESPIE, 1808, to
      members in 1870 was published in the magazine of the South Carolina
      Historical Society.

      No Gillespies have been found in the area of Virginia where Francis
      Young settled.

      Gillespies have been located in Georgetown, SC prior to 1715, but
      their connection to this JAMES GILLESPIE has not been confirmed.

      #1 JAMES GILLESPIE, b.ca.1710 possibly in Northern Ireland-d.1754
      Marlboro County, SC. He married MARY YOUNG, d. 1766/67, dau. of
      FRANCIS YOUNG, Surveyor General of the Carolina Colony, who came
      from Virginia. JAMES served as a Deputy Surveyor under FRANCIS
      YOUNG. JAMES was a Carolina Colony surveyor, later a commercial
      boatman and farmer. JAMES GILLESPIE was involved in operating one of
      the first commercial boats from the Georgetown area up to the rapids
      at Cheraw, SC, just a few miles upriver from where he settled. They
      had two sons, three daughters.

      Sayler's Creek Battle, Virginia. They had 6 sons, 3 daughters

      JAMES, SAMUEL and FRANCES were all born on the family
      plantation, "Rose Hill", located across the Great Pee Dee River,
      east of Cheraw, SC.
