As it stands right now, the Clayton Genealogy Library in Houston, Texas, one of the top three genealogy libraries in the United States, will very soon loose about 20 hours of patron research hours per week ...

The following is a close approximation of the new proposed hours, which will begin on Saturday, April 17th are as follows:

      Monday - 10 am to 6 pm
      Tuesday - 10 am to 6 pm
      Wednesday - 10 am to 8 pm
      Thursday - 10 am to 6 pm
      Friday - CLOSED
      Saturday - 10 am to 5 pm

Total proposed to be open - 41 hours per week ...

It is important to note this is only a reduction in hours of operation the library will be open to the public ... There are NO reductions in staff hours and they will continue to work 40-hours per week ...

Again, this is only a reduction in services to the public ,,,,

These hours are suppose to be adopted by all libraries in the Houston Public Library System and do not take into consideration that Clayton Library is a reference collection and is non-circulating ... Whereas a reduction in hours for local neighborhood libraries can be adjusted by patrons just checking our more books ...

There are no consideration that Clayton Library is a unique special collection and reducing hours will have a major impact on most researchers ...

This change will have an especially severe impact on working researchers ...

The average time in Houston people get off work is 4:30 / 5 pm ... We have had an average of 10.5 hours of research time per week in the evenings ... (5:30 to 9 pm, Tues, Wed & Thur) ... NOW, we will only have 2.5 hours of research time per week in the evenings ... (5:30 to 8 pm, Wed) ...

It is a cookie-cutter fix that does not fit the Clayton Libraries unique needs ...

Some folks have said that if we have to cut hours, lets cut Monday instead of Friday ... but the Library Director wants / expects full conformity to her plan that all libraries (neighborhoods and downtown) will be closed to the public and staff working a full-day on Fridays and one-hour before the library opens to the public ...

If you'd like to share your thoughts about the reduction of Clayton Library hours, please consider writing a letter / e-mail to the Mayor and City Council ... you can find links on-line at ... http://www.houstontx.gov/ ... place the hand over GOVERNMENT and let the drop down menu come up and the click on Mayor or City Council ...

However, you should also know the Library Director is not open to any public opinion on this issue ... and that Mayor Parker has already approved this system-wide reduction in services to the public ... and all of these decisions have been made without any public hearing or input ...
