      From the Clayton Crier:

      Houston Public Library Digital Archive
Houston Public Library now has a digital archive database available on the
web. There are many different collections to search through for
information. These include the Houston Oral History Project and Milsaps
Collection. However, one of the most important collections for genealogy
research is the Houston City Directories digital collection. Although this
collection only covers the years 1866-1922 there is an ongoing effort to add
more city directories. There is also a future plan to add family histories
      in the Genealogy Collection.
Much information can be gained by using city directories such as name of
spouse, occupation, residence, and the number of years residing in a
specific place. City directories are also quite helpful in finding "lost"
ancestors that do not appear in a census index. It is possible to find
ancestors in city directories and then locate that residence in the
enumeration district of the census record. Also, many city directories
contain advertisements from local businesses contemporary to the time
period. It could be possible to find such an advertisement from a business
      that an ancestor worked for.
To access the Houston City Directories, visit the Houston Public Library
Digital Archive at http://digital.houstonlibrary.org/, select the browse
option on the main page of the database. Then in the drop down menu, select
Houston City Directories and select go. Select a city directory year to
view and click on access this item. The entire directory for that year will
then download. Scrolling to the specific name will then be necessary to
view information. A search function for name or address is unavailable at
      this time.
A wonderful feature of the Houston Public Library Digital Archive is the
inclusion of a personal page. Those viewing the archive can create a "My
Favorites" page to add important items for quick reference. In addition
there is a great new feature to share the Houston City Directories via
Facebook on the top tool bar!
