New guy here,
I’m very happy to find this group, and see a couple of familiar names among the membership.
My primary area of interest is older British bikes. Many w/Sturmey Archer AW, FW, FM and S5 hubs. While I don’t have much hands-on experience with other SA hubs, I do know quite a bit about these.
Back in 1966 I gave a pretty girl a ride home from a party on the rear rack of my Hercules 3 speed. We’re still riding hub gears together. We find that even people in their 60s can tour with the 225% range of an S5, at least in the Midwest. I’ve ridden every 3 Speed Tour of Lake Pepin http://3speedtour. com
and Jane has done most of them.
Some of our S5s started out as FWs or S5/2s but I upgraded them to S5 spec with a few different parts & bellcranks.
About half of our bikes have
internally geared hubs. These are listed below
1950 Norman roadster - FW 4 speed
1958 Raleigh Record Ace Moderne – FM 4 speed
1964 Raleigh 3 speed based MWB Recumbent – S5 5 speed
1965 Ladies Robin Hood - S5
1970 Moulton Mk III - S5 in alloy AW shell
1973 Raleigh Sport – S5 (w/alloy cranks, rims, bars. stem, seatpost. brakes, levers etc.)
1973 Raleigh Lady's Sport - S5
1975 Raleigh "Twenty" Folder - S5
