                John,
"ownia" itself means nothing in Polish or in relation to map either. It is the way Polish grammar operates and "ownia" sometimes is used as an adjective (describing who the place belonged to, or was famous for or some other attribute. So, if the name is for example "Jan" then "Janownia" could mean village where Jan lived or owned, or the village full of Jans. Or another example, "Grzyb" - a mushroom, "Grzybownia" could mean place where a lot of mushrooms grow. This form of grammar is not used very often anymore.
                Hope that helps
                Andrew

It is the way Polish grammar operates and "ownia" sometimes is used as an adjective (describing who the place belonged to, or was famous for or some other attribute. So, if the name is for example "Jan" then "Janownia" could mean village where Jan lived or owned, or the village full of Jans. Or another example, "Grzyb" - a mushroom, "Grzybownia" could mean place where a lot of mushrooms grow.?This form of grammar is not used very often anymore.
