Ron Fredericks KD8DMR posted the following on the IEEE mailing list:

Grand Rapids Area Radio “Hams” to Hold Annual Field Day June 23 and 24th and the West Michigan Section is Invited for a Saturday Evening Picnic and Demo

The West Michigan Section IEEE will be joining the Grand Rapids Amateur Radio Association for a Saturday Evening Picnic during the latter’s annual Field Day which takes place Saturday and Sunday June 22 and 23. See the attached public announcement. The location is the Gainey Athletic Field on the east side of Calvin College campus in Grand Rapids. The general public is invited to drop by anytime from 2 P.M. Saturday the 22nd to noon Sunday the 23rd for a very educational demo of how hams conduct emergency communications using generators or alternate energy and makeshift (and not-so makeshift) antennas. However all WMS-IEEE members and their guests are specially invited to a 5:30 P.M. Saturday picnic with the GRARA operators at the athletic complex east of the Prince Conference Center. At that time the Section will serve a picnic dinner consisting of pizza (both regular and deep-dish), appetizers, salad, and pop and fruit dessert.

The Section will supply everything for this combination technical and social event. All you have to do is let WMS IEEE Secretary Ron Fredricks (and radio amateur operator extra class operator K8DMR) know you are coming. If you are bringing a non-IEEE guest there will be a charge of $5 otherwise there is no cost for this last event before the Section goes dormant for the summer. Please call or E-mail Ron with you RSVP by Tuesday June 18th at 616-608-5992 (home office) or ron_fredricks@... (underscore between the first and last name).

Visitors should access the complex via the Calvin east gate off of East Paris and north of Burton Street between Burton and Lake Drive (the west gate adjacent to the Prince Conference Center will probably be closed). Look for us by the Field House building. A map of the campus is available at www.calvin.edu/map . The exact address for the Gainey Athletic complex is 1661 East Paris Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at 5:30 (or before) on the 22nd. Come early and stay late as we will have 5 HF and VHF/UHF stations running for the contest. One of them will be a special "Get on the Air" station for non-licensed or new hams which will allow you to make some actual contest contacts under the supervision of a licensed amateur.
