        Thanks everyone for your comments regarding my engine. For those of you who
        do not know, my Sherman came of Salisbury Plain in 1991. This is a very large
        army training area used primarilly by the Royal Artillery.
        The tank is, as can be expected, a wreck with some lower hull damage. However
        the bulk of the vehicle is in surprisingly good condition.
        Today, I removed the traverse unit, elevation box and about half of the
        turret mounting bolts in preperation to lifting the turret.
        The engine is mainly all ex-range allthough I did have a very large slice of
        luck finding nos blocks in Belgium (sorry Georges!). I also had tohave a new
        radiator core made but this is hardly surprising!
        Hope to have the tank running next year, will keep you all posted.

          Question for you. Is the main generator for your sherman mounted on
          the multibank?

          The early M4A4's don't show it near the trans cooler. The only other
          place I can think of is the on the engine near the starter.

          Indeed the early Multibanks ( 5 individual belt driven water pumps ) had a generator on the engine belt fed from one of the water pump belts. Good idea until

            idea until one of the 5 belts breaks and then that engine overheats and
            seizes solid with a catastrophic failure !!!!!!

              Further to Carls answer, the first 1000 or so M4A4,s had the generator
              mounted on No 2 block, in line with the starter motor. When the change was
              made to the single water pump, the generator was moved into the fighting
              compartment behind the batteries. It was then driven by two belts off the
              propshaft. This does mean that it stops when you use the clutch but this is
              not a problem. My tank was built with the early system but was converted at
              some point.

              This last weekend, I removed the turret and basket. Work goes on!
