1 Corinthians 12:1-31
"But when the people of Israel cried to the Lord, the Lord raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud, the son of Gera, a Benjaminite, a left handed man. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab(Judges 3:15)."
For a long time, I thought my genetics were a curse. I was born with manic depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, a little OCD, some Tourettes. I thought my genetics were faulty, and that I couldn't really function in society as a person. I thought I didn't have any good use. I decided that someone screwed up in the head like me who can't even make friends or get a girlfriend didn't have the right psychological traits that make for a good evangelist.
But then I read this story about Ehud. As disturbing and repulsive as the story seems (the guy tricks a fat king to let his guard down so he can stab him and get away) the lesson we should take away from this was that he was a southpaw, and he was sent to deliver Israel from their enemy.
The guy lived in a society where anyone who got anywhere in society was right handed. In a right handed culture like this, the king wasn't expecting a left handed stab.
In a similar way, mental disorders and other disadvantages may be useful in the battle against Satan. They may seem like weakness, but so did Ehud's left handedness.
If you buy a fancy automotive repair kit, you'll see a lot of funny, weird looking tools inside it. Lots of different sized ratchets, odd clamp thingies and bizarre things with elbow joint attachments. Each one of them has a specific purpose, and you wouldn't be able to solve certain types of mechanical problems without them. Some of the weirdest looking tools are indispensable As Christians, each and every one of us is a tool in God's toolbox. And when it comes to solving life's big problems, all of us are indispensable, the weird ones especially. May we all more fully understand our roles.
Dear Father in heaven, help me to understand my role in your kingdom, what my strengths and weaknesses are, so I can serve you in the way you designed me to serve. I pray this in your Son's holy name. Amen.
