Also in the historical section is the house where Michele Pezza (Fra
Diavolo), Itri's most famous citizen, was born on April 7, 1771. He
became quite ill when he was little, and after he was cured, he wore
a Franciscan frock. His companions called him "Fra Michele
Archangelo" (Brother Michael, the Archangel) but this was
transformed into "Fra Diavolo" (Brother Michael, the Devil) by a
teacher who found him to be naughty in school. When he was older, he
killed two men and became an outlaw on the Appian Way, where he held
up travelers and stagecoaches. He became famous and was asked by the
King of Naples to wage guerilla warfare against the French. He
fought valiantly, but was caught, and when he refused to change
sides and become a leader of the French forces, the French hanged
him in the marketplace in Naples on November 11, 1806.
