A female name of Maria Civita is a dead giveaway that the family has roots in Itri.
Madonna della Civita is the patron saint of Itri.  And this side of the Pond, just try getting through Knightsville, Cranston on the weekend closest to 21 July !    Total gridlock as Itri in RI celebrates la Festa della Madona della Civita aka St. Mary's Feast complete with a procession carrying the statue of the Madonna & Jesus from St. Mary's Church.
Due to the lack of access to records before 1809, with the exception of the 1754 catasto which Jason here spearheaded the acqusition of a few years back, and past 1865, I think everyone here is stopped in their tracks.
But for my cousin wanting an Italian passport and finally taking some time off from work - she's a dyed in the cloth career woman & happily married to her job -  for a trip to Itri for the necessary certified record copies, I'd have gone right on thinking my grandmother's parents were Luigi Cannella & Maria Loretta Cardi.

Well, we certainly have had Civita's in the line.  Unfortunately, on the Saccoccio side I more or less hit dead end after great grandparents.  Grandfather Saccoccio came from Itri about 1905 and settled in Cambridge, MA, via Saco, Maine.  He only had one brother whom he left behind in Itri.  That brother was named Angelo.  His parents died in Itri in a carriage accident well before he emigrated here.  Is Civita a common name there??  I get the impression that it was.  Father had cousins named Civita.  Not sure there was a Maria Civita Saccoccio.

      Hi Paul,
Sandy did some major damage to RI's coastal communities with buildings/homes destroyed and/or washed out to sea, dunes & beaches totally gone but no loss of life that I know of, thankfully.
Inland, we lost power for only a day which is an all time record for the rural area I live in.  We are usually among the first to lose power in a storm & the last to get it back.  Difficult enough to deal with no heat in a winter storm or no refrigeration for food during the summer but being on a private well as I am,  a power outage also means no water for even the most basic sanitation needs much less to drink or cook with so I was thrilled the outage wasn't 7 days like last year with Hurricane Irene.
As bad as some of our storms here have been I still don't think RI has been hit as severly as the NJ/NY area since maybe the hurricanes of 1938 & 1954.    My heart goes out to those people.  Fortunately none of my relations, close & somewhat distant, late of Ocean Co & those on Staten Island were too severly affected.  Both the Ocean Co. cousins had just finally sold their houses and moved further inland but pity those who bought the houses and have mortgages only a few months old.
On the genealogy side, I did learn something new this past Aug.  Not Capotosto - that would have been in the Cardi line - but thrilling to me none the less.
A cousin who lives & works in Europe, took a week vacation to Itri and got certified copies of our grandparents' births and marriage.
With only the FHL films available to me and a copy of my grandmother's civil birth record which was gotten for me by a researcher in Fondi I was helping,  I've always thought my great-grandmother on my grandmother's side was named Maria Loretta Cardi.
Maybe because the copy the Fondi researcher got me isn't certified is the reason it has less information but it contains only my grandmother's DOB and name.
So, with that and a marriage I'd found in the FHL films for my great-grandfather Luigi Cannella to Maria Loretta Cardi, I've just gone on faith that my grandmother, Rachele Cannella b. 27 Jan 1869 in Itri, was the daughter of Loretta.
It seems now, however, from the certified copies my cosuin obtained in Itri this summer, that Luigi had 2 wives.  Or there's also the possibility that maybe there was a second Luigi Cannella that I just didn't find in the films the times I went through them.
      Assuming I didn't over look a second Luigi then there's Luigi Cannella's 1st wife Maria Loretta Cardi with whom he had Antonio b. 1851, Giuseppe Maria Orazio b. 1854, Francesco b. 1858 & Maria Teresa b. 1861.
Then Maria Loretta must have died & Luigi remarried at some point because the certified copy of my grandmother's birth in 1869 names her mother as Maria Civita Saccoccio.
Any yes, despite my having been born after WW II, my grandparents were b. in the 1860's...big, spreadout over the years family.
Looks like I'll be digging into those FHL Itrani films at the FHC to try and find a Maria Civita Saccoccio of the proper age to have possibly been my grandmother's mother & Luigi's second wife as well as going over the deaths again to see if I can spot a possible second Luigi and a death for Maria Loretta in the years available on film.
So, does anyone with Saccoccio ancestors have a Maria Civita who married a Luigi Cannella?

      Hey Itrano's,
With all the devastation Sandy has brought to the NY/NJ area, I hope it did not cause too much harm to you, your family or your friends. My family experienced varying degrees of property damage but thankfully no loss of life.
I would like to start the conversation again and try to learn more about my family and Itri. Has anyone had any new breakthroughs in their lineage that may include my family name, Capotosto? Also has anyone had success researching the town of Itri's records, i.e. Birth, Marriage or Death certificates? You may have given me the answer in the past but as it has been a long time since I've written, yahoo cancelled me for inactivity, and all former email was deleted.
Thank you for any help you can offer,
      Paul Capotosto
