Lead is a toxic metal that is very harmful to children’s health. And while Colorado’s water infrastructure has been well maintained, it is crucial to test for elevated lead levels, particularly in school water, to preserve the well being of our children.
This year, the Colorado legislature is considering a bill HB17-1306: Test Lead in Public Schools’ Drinking Water which would establish a grant program to fund such testing. This bill would give schools access to additional resources to perform this very important test.
Even just low levels of lead in the blood has been associated with a wide array of health risks, from behavioral problems to impaired growth. These serious risks are detectable and preventable with water quality testing.
