I actually *liked* Brightly Burning the first time I read it...but I did read it backstage (I do theatre...when I'm not onstage I read, typically) and I tend to like anything I read backstage - it beats listening to people whine. However, I tried reading it again, and was like "wow, this is really bad." ^_^ I do love the cover art too, though.
As for burning books, I remember when we studied "Fahrenheit 451" in English class. [For those who haven't read it, it's a futuristic novel about how censorship and burning books is a bad thing] I really hated it, really hated it. It had no point. I remember raising my hand and saying "I've honestly never wanted to burn a book before in my life, up until now. This book is really really really bad. Doesn't anyone find this the least bit ironic?" My teacher was not amused. ^_^ Unfortunately, there were no ants in the classroom to take my book away. It would have been nice!
