On this day. . .November 1
- 1906-On the morning shift at the McCormick iron mill (Paxton Furnace) on South Ninth Street south of Shanois(Today this is somewhat of a thickly grown wilderness area to the rear of the old Robbins Door and Sash building at Cameron and Shanois) a ladle “bell” slipped causing a charge of smelting mixture to explode injuring five employees and setting fire to surrounding sheds. On their arrival to Box 53 located at S. Ninth and Sycamore, firemen were frantically waved down Ninth Street to the scene. They had their hands full having to battle six fires at one time. Loss was listed at $900.
