      > Dear loyal Light in Winter volunteers,
      > Many of you may be wondering whether Light in Winter is happening this year. Well, the answer is "yes" but not in the same format we've known. As many of you may already know, after the completion of the festival in 2011, Barbara Mink, our artistic director, announced that after a really productive run of festivals, she was stepping down in order to spend more time working on her own art work. The LIW Board of Directors decided that we would explore options for staffing, and also see whether we could--in the transition period--produce a festival with our own artistic and creative resources. The plans for 2012 were well underway until the middle of this past fall, when Executive Director Marie Sirakos also had to step down due to a combination of out-of-town commitments to aging parents, and a number of other big shifts in her life.
      > Shaken, but not ready to give up, the Board realized that in the time left before the 2012 festival, we did not have the time to 1) recruit and hire new staff, and 2) stay on track with all of the fundraising and production details associated with a full-scale festival.
      > Fortunately, through a partnership with the State Theatre and the Visitor's Center, Light in Winter will not disappear this year, although we're going to produce a more modest offering. In addition, the Hall of Wonders will not happen in 2012, although we hope to bring it back in the future. Our 2012 events will be in conjunction with Ithaca Loves Teachers Week in February, and we'll be offering several presentations that we hope to complement the State Theatre productions by String Fever and Galumpha on February 18th and 19th, with a more "science-y" slant on the topics they're addressing. In addition, we'll be producing a very cool Science Cabaret on February 24th.
      > It's certainly a time of changes, and we're about to start recruiting for staff positions so we'll be able to gear back up to full speed in 2013. We hope that you'll be ready to plug back in again, and in 2012, show your support for Light in Winter by attending some or all of our events.
      > We are forever appreciative of the energy you've shared with us in past festivals, and look forward to seeing you again soon.
      > All the best,
