Open your children's eyes to the world. The Alaska 4-H Japan Exchange program is accepting applications from youth ages 10-16 to host a Japanese boy or girl, ages 12-13, in their home from July 22-August 18, 2010. You don't need to do anything special, have a large home or a spare room; only a bed, food and an open heart. The Japanese youth want to do chores and be treated as a member of the family. If you spend your summer hanging around the house, or cheering a family member at the soccer field, then that is what they want to do. They arrive ready to share their Japanese culture and to cook a Japanese meal for your family. They are well-prepared and have their own insurance and spending money. Their parents will pay for them to go to any camps attended by their host. They can travel within Alaska. Host youth gain a global perspective and a new friend. The experience is life-changing. 4-H is a youth leadership program sponsored by the University of Alaska. Host youth are eligible to enter in the 4-H categories at the Fair and to receive a discount if they wish to travel to Japan with this exchange program. This exchange has been in the USA for 40 years. More than 30 families in the Fairbanks/North Pole area have participated. There are no program fees. Please share this information with any families who would enjoy this experience. For more information and to receive an application, contact Jill Holmgren at 455-6987 or email: japanalaska@...
