I am a new owner of an FT-897D, the radio works fine but the Yaesu FC-
30 automatic tuner makes a loud ratcheting noise during tune-up and
then is quiet. Is this normal, does your tuner 'buzz' while moving the
      capacitors and coils?

          Hi Bob,

I don't own one of those tuners but I have an Elecraft T1 which I use with
my FT817. It works on the same principle, which is that there are a number
of fixed L and C components which are switched by latching relays. What you
are hearing is the relays switching quickly trying the different
combinations of L & C to find the best match. They really work very well, in
          my experience.
