- Hi, newby here. I've been modeling in ON3, ON30, On20 for years now,
thought I'd try a model in a larger scale. I'd like to build the
Silver City, Pinos Altos & Mogollon caboose, as shown in the J/F 1999
Gazette. I built it in On30 and it was a lot of fun.
Can anyone point me to a source for trucks/sideframes/wheels? The
plans call for 3' wheelbase, 20" diameter wheels, swing motion. Any
help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bill and List,
Hi folks! Actually it was me (that Design-Tech guy) who did the trucks
you are talking about. I used O scale San Juan Engineering standard
gauge archbar truck sideframes. I made resin bolsters and spring planks
to fit the sideframes for my appropriate gauge. The truck sideframes
come from the SJE #214-P, Proto 48, 50 ton Archbar Freight Trucks,
$10.95 per pair with plastic 33" wheels. The wheelbase scales out to
3'7" in 3/8th's scale.
For wheels, I use NorthWest Short Line "O" Scale wheelsets, the NWSL/145
series. I'm surprised you guys didn't mention them as a source for
wheels! Much better cross section than undersized skinny On3 wheels.
They make "O" scale 26, 28, 30, 33, 36 and 40 inch wheels in this
series. You'll have to do the math for the conversion. The 30" in O
equals a 20" in 3/8th's.
I've posted some pictures back into the shared files of these trucks.
I'm also making correct Gilpin sideframes/trucks for some 3/8n2 Gilpin
models. These are entirely cast out of resin. They are a little bit
fragile, but work well. I posted a picture of this sideframe pattern in
the shared files also.
