Rajya Sabha Committee report on Adolescent Education Programme
The Rajya Sabha Committee on Petitions chaired by Shri Venkaiyya Naidu has presented their report on Adolescent (health) education programme, which is the 135th report of the committee. This was released in the beginning of this month. The report I think can be of long term as well as wider impact.
Celebrating the Indian culture, the committee says a very clear “no” to sex education and goes further on expressing its views related to sex and sex education. It also condemns very strongly the material prepared by NACO for AEP and sees it as a conspiracy. Further, it says that the preparation of curriculum related material for students is the sole business of the MHRD agencies and involving agencies related to any other govt departments and ministries in such activities is not acceptable. There are many more issues - right from the basic outlook on the matter to the final observations and recommendations.
I think many of the observations and recommendations of the committee are retrogressive in nature. Many of the progressive groups or individuals, it seems, have got no opportunity to interact with the committee or to submit their views on the matter, during the course of action by the committee.
