Anhad started its 'Restore Democracy
' campaign in Gujarat in February 2007. Since then we have organized a state level Youth Convention, we organized the first public screening of Parzania, we organized a major demonstration against Babu Bajrangi demanding his arrest and innumerable other smaller protests.
Anhad , in collaboration with approximately 15 Gujarat based organizations, flagged off three Youth Karwans on June 5th which have been since then been traveling and covering villages across Gujarat. As part of the The
campaign the Youth Karwans have already covered 16 districts out of the total of 25 districts. The target was to cover 900 villages, by the time this campaign ends in August the Karwans would have covered around 800 villages. The young volunteers after reaching a village first display the exhibition which they are carrying, the exhibition has panels on our independence struggle, on the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi, Ambedkar, Bhagat Singh, the exhibition has several panels on the Indian Constitution and our composite culture. the exhibition also has a large number of photographs on two huge panels exposing the myth of Vibrant Gujarat. The youth volunteers then organise public meetings in the villages and talk about the conditions in present Gujarat both economical, which are in a mess specially in the rural belt, and the constant attack on our democratic rights and on the freedom of expression. They screen documentaries and feature films.
After the public meeting and the question and answer session the youth group performs a street play and sings a few songs.
In one day one group covers 3-4 villages, so together they cover about 11-15 villages depending on the distances between the villages and the terrain of the district which they cover on a particular day.
We have distributed more than 3 lakh leaflets so far as well as one lakh copies of the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. Also every village where the Karwan goes people who want to take a pledge to save
, sign on a specially designed poster. Also a nicely designed poster with preamble of the Indian Constitution is gifted to every village where the team reaches.
One of the Karwan's was attacked in Amreli district. The administration tried to put anti national activity charges on the young volunteers and it took us five hours to get the youth members out of the illegal detention. The impact of this campaign can be assessed by a news item published three days ago in a regional daily asking the BJP youth to combat Anhad. Rupala, the state BJP chief is quoted in the news item as saying that Anhad has brought 1000 young people from other states to campaign against the govt . We definitely consider it as a compliment if our 30 young volunteers from Gujarat are giving an impression of being a 1000 strong contingent.
Anhad plans to launch major campaigns in the coming months beginning mid August in Gujarat to defeat the present fascist government.
We are a small organisation and do not claim that only the work done by us would finally result in the defeat or not. If they are defeated it will be because there are hundreds of activists and organisations both voluntary and political resisting them within Gujarat. If all our efforts result in their defeat it will be a major victory for secular forces. if it does not even then the need to resist and fight can not be undermined.
We had appealed to friends to help us financially. Some did, some promised, some thought it was useless as nothing will come out of it.
We are writing to all of you again to donate as much as you can to Anhad to help us continue our campaign. All we can say it is not impossible to defeat the fascist forces in Gujarat. We also promise that every single paisa that is donated to us will be used to its maximum potential. Everyone who is part of the campaign is giving voluntary time to the campaign.
Anhad accepts only Indian funds.
