      CM out to woo Muslims
      [ 3 Nov, 2006 0321hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

LUCKNOW: With the assembly elections slated for early next year, the
event had high political overtones as chief minister Mulayam Singh
Yadav went all out to woo the Muslim community.

The CM said that madarsas are spreading brotherhood and not terrorism
as being portrayed by some. Even the home minister of the country was
projecting madarsas as terror training camps, alleging that they had
links with SIMI. "So I had to come out in open in support of
madarsas," Yadav said adding that not madarsas but institutions like
Saraswati Shishu Mandir were breeding hatred.

Referring to the Congress indirectly, he accused it of deliberately
keeping the masses poor and ignorant. He said that poverty and
illiteracy were not being eliminated from the country under a
conspiracy by the people who have ruled at the Centre for long.

The CM said that even though the percentage of Muslims in total
population is not as high, 80% of labour intensive hand work in the
country is being done by them. He also said that during his tenure as
defence minister, he came to know that the percentage of Muslims was
only 2% in the Army, while 145 of Kargil war martyrs were Muslims.

He also referred to the IB report that hinted that the chief minister
of one of the north Indian states had links with ISI. He claimed that
the report actually referred to him and he was being indicted as he
supports the Muslims and has their support in return.

Jauhar University in Rampur, though facing financial difficulties
temporarily, will be one of the best university in the world. It will
be open to people of all caste and high quality education will be
      imparted here.

He also spoke about difficulties faced in making Urdu a second
      official language of the state.

He announced that 5,000 more teachers will be recruited. As many as
      3,200 teachers have already joined.
