Pilgrims of peace and harmony belonging to various social organisations who congregated from various parts of the country in Ayodhya on the martydom day of Babri Masjid were arrested by police and released after two hours. 31 peace activists including Dr. Sandeep Pandey, Magsaysay award winner, Arvind murthy, state coordinator of NAPM (National Alliance of Peoples Movement), Habibur Rehman, National President of Confederation of Minorities, Bhante Dr. Dhamm Tejankar Deep and 10 other Buddhist monks belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Baudhayan Bhikku Sangh were arrested and taken to the Kotwali police station of Faizabad. Father Anand IMS and his 12 member Sadbhavana Yatra team from Kashi to Kurukshetra were also arrested along with these 31 activists, but were released soon on the condition that they would leave Faizabad immediately. The 31 who were taken to the Kotwali station were released unconditionally after two hours at the intervention of the home minister from Delhi.
As per a programme chalked out in September 2005, activists belongiong to various social organisations like Asha, Ayodhya Ki Awaz, NAPM, Vishwa Jyoti Communications and Prerana Kala Manch of Varanasi a peace march on 6th Dec from Tedhi Churaha to Ram Ki paidhi and a meeting in Gandhi Bhavan in Ram Ki Paidhi were planned. Most of the activists arrived on 5th Dec at gathered at Kabir Mutt in Jiyanpur village in Ayodhya. Faizal Khan of Asha and 15others had arrived after a 350 kilo meters long foot march from Kannauj to Ayodhya. The artisted of Prerana Kala Manch who left Varanasi on 8th November arrived on the 29th dsay of their Sadbhavan Yatra after covering a distance of 2650 kilo meters via Allahaabad, Agra, Mathura, Delhi, Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Panipat, Baghpat, Sardhana, Moradabhad, Ramnpur, Barelly, Shahjahanpur, Sitapur, Lucknow, Barabanki etc.giving message of peace and harmony in
36 towns and cities with their street plays and songs. A cultural trroupe consisting of 9 girls and boys had also arrived from Azamgarh. Jugal Kishore Shastri, a former Vishwa Hindu Parishad activist and now committed to peace and communal harmony was coordinating the programmes locally. The latter had obtained permission for the programme on 6th in Kabir Mutt and also for the assembly at Ram Ki Paidhi. The local adminstration had promised all help and cooperation. But in the morning of 6th Dec. Kabir Mutt looked like a police camp and the police informed that the messengers of peace and harmony will not be allowed to get out of the Kabir Mutt premises. The local activists who were to help in the programme at Ram Ki Paidhi were kept under house arrest. Activists from other towns were not allowed to enter into Ayodhya althopugh they all promised that theirs is a peaceful meeting for the cause of harmony and brotherhood. At 11 a.m. Dr.Sandeep Pandey arrived from Delhi and the peace activists decided not to have a confrontation with the police. From 1 p.m. the artistes of Prerqana Kala Manch sang songs on peace and communal harmony and performed a street play followed by a peaceful meeting in the Kabir Mutt. But all of a sudden at 4 p.m. the ADM city Indu Kumar Tripathi gave orders to the police to arrest all those who were attending the meeting in a peacerful manner. After some a heated argument with Father Anand, the latter, the PKM artistes along with Brother Tarun and driver Arjun were let off on a condition that they will leave Faizabad immediately.
On hearing the release of the other activists after two hours, Sadbhavana yatris for Varanasi are still continuing to stay in Faizabad to continue their peace pilgrimage on 7th Dec. The campaign will be concluded at Varanasi. Dr. Sandeep Pandey and other activists will adress a Press Conference at Lucknow on 7th Dec. To condemn the arrest of the peace activists.
