Ariel Sharon: Profile of a Ruthless War Criminal

Ariel Sharon was born in 1928 in Palestine into a family with strong
Zionist sympathies. In 1942, at the age of 14, he became a member of
the Haganah, the terrorist wing of the Zionist movement. The Zionists
were intent on forcibly seizing the land of Palestine and driving the
Palestinian people away from their homeland by means of terror and
intimidation and populating the land with "Jews" immigrating from
Europe and elsewhere. As the scale of his brutalities against the
Palestinian people increased with time, he became increasingly
prominent in the vile movement. For more than sixty years of his
life, the seventy-five year old Sharon has personally committed
untold atrocities against the Palestinian people and his hands are
      smeared with their blood.

During the 1948 War that followed the forcible establishment of the
State of Israel, the then 20-year old Sharon headed an infantry
company in the Alexandroni Brigade of the Israeli forces - a
marauding force that drove an estimated 300,000 Palestinians from
their land using genocidal methods. Sharon gained notoriety in August
1953, when as a 25-year old he founded "Unit 101," a secret death
squad within the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), that carried out a
series of terror raids and committed mass murders of Palestinians.
One of the most notorious incidents was the raid on the Palestinian
village of Qibiya in the West Bank. During the night of 14-15 October
1953, Sharon and his death squad slaughtered 69 innocent
Palestinians, including women, children and the old, by blowing up
with explosives and machineguns the entire village, which comprised
45 houses, school, place of worship, and some domestic animals as

Instead of being brought to account, Sharon was rewarded for his war
crimes by having his "Unit 101" absorbed into the Israeli paratroop
corps. By 1956, Sharon was appointed as paratroop brigade commander.
During the 1956 joint British, Israeli, and French invasion of the
Suez Canal, Sharon and his lifelong collaborator in mass murder,
Rafael Eytan, carried out another horrific war crime: in three
separate incidents, Sharon and Eytan-led paratrooper units murdered
Egyptian prisoners of war, as well as civilian Sudanese workers who
had been captured. All told, 273 unarmed prisoners were executed and
dumped into mass graves. The story about the killings broke-out
nearly 40 years later in a paper on the Sinai campaign commissioned
by the Israeli army's military history division. They were described
in graphic detail in newspaper and television interviews in Israel.
But it was only after the London Daily Telegraph on

In 1957 he attended the Camberley Staff College in Great Britain.
During 1958-62, Sharon served as Infantry Brigade Commander and then
Infantry School Commander, and attended Law School at Tel Aviv
University. He was appointed Head of the Northern Command Staff in
1964 and Head of the Army Training Department in 1966. He
participated in the 1967 Six Day War as commander of an armored

In 1969 he was appointed Head of the Southern Command Staff. In that
capacity, during 1969-1971, under the euphemistic title
of "Pacification of Gaza," Sharon carried out a brutal policy of
repression in Gaza Strip, blowing up houses, bulldozing large tracts
of refugee camps and imposing severe collective punishments. Hundreds
of young Palestinians were killed or unjustly imprisoned, their
houses demolished and the whole area was effectively transformed into
      a jail.

Sharon resigned from the army in June 1972, but was recalled to
active military service in the 1973 Yom Kippur War to command an
armored division. He was subsequently elected to the Knesset (Israeli
Parliament) in December 1973, about the time that the Israeli
government lifted the ban on private sales of West Bank land to
Israelis. The decision was brought about through heavy lobbying by
Sharon's close associates. So Sharon's resignation from the IDF, far
from ending his career of mass butchery, coincided with the launching
of an even more ambitious criminal enterprise that would see
thousands of Palestinians killed and wounded as part of the "Eretz
Israel," or "Greater Israel" drive to permanently annex all of the
West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights--and resettle these
areas with Jewish immigrants, after the Palestinians have been
eliminated. In June 1974, Sharon peronally led a group of settlers to
establish an illegal outpost near the West Bank

Sharon resigned from the Knesset in 1975 to serve as Security Adviser
to Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. He was again elected to the Knesset
in 1977. That same year, under the leadership of Menachem Begin, the
Likud Party had won the general election in Israel for the first time.

Sharon joined Begin's first administration as Minister of Agriculture
in charge of settlements. In that capacity, Sharon launched a massive
expansion of Jewish "agricultural settlements" throughout the West
Bank and Gaza. During 1977-81, more than 25,000 new settlers--mostly
members of the Gush Emunim, the fanatical settler movement --moved
into the occupied territories. The Gush Emunim settlers also formed
into death squads explicitly modeled on Sharon's old "Unit 101. As an
avid supporter of the Gush Emunim, Sharon was one of main
facilitators of a settlement boom aimed at preventing the
establishment of a Palestinian state in the occupied territories of
West Bank and Gaza. In 1979, the Israeli Supreme Court ratified the
private land purchases in the occupied territories, and immediately,
Sharon's mafia cronies set up several real estate ventures hoping to
reap the "Land-scam". In 1980, Sharon and Yuval Ne'eman formed

In June 1981, his settlement campaign was one of the keys to Likud's
re-election, as he was credited with making swift and permanent
progress in establishing a pervasive Israeli presence in the West
Bank. Begin then appointed Sharon Minister of Defence, which
presented him with yet another opportunity to launch an offensive
against the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO), the vanguard
      of the Palestinian people.

The "Land-scam" coincided with the Sharon-led Israeli invasion of
Lebanon that began on June 4, 1982, and was aimed at wiping out the
PLO, which had established its base in several refugee camps near
Beirut. Between June 6 and September 16, 1982, the IDF, under
Sharon's direction, killed a total of some18,000 Palestinians and
Lebanese and wounded over 30,000 in a military campaign that Sharon
called "Operation Peace in Galilee." Over 40,000 houses were also
      destroyed in the indiscri

This was not all. "On the evening of September 16, 1982, the IDF,
having surrounded the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila,
dispatched approximately 300 to 400 Christian militiamen
[Phalangists] to the camps to rout what was believed to be the
remnant of the Palestinian forces.... Over a period of two days, the
Christian militiamen massacred some 700 to 800 Palestinian men,
women, and children" (Ibid). Palestinian sources, however, claim that
the death toll was over 3500.

World-wide protests against the gruesome murders, including a massive
400,000-strong protest rally in Tel Aviv, forced the Israeli
Government to set up a Commission of Inquiry headed by the then
President of the Israeli Supreme Court, Yitzhak Kahan, to investigate
the Sabra and Shatila massacre. The Kahan Commission found Sharon to
be complicit in the crimes and recommended his dismissal as Defence
Minister. Thus, Sharon was forced to resign his post on 13 February
1983 just five days after the release of the Report. The
reverberations of the developments led to the fall of the Begin
      government as well.

The situation in Israel was such that Sharon was able to bounce back
to power in no time. The establishment of a Likud-Labor national
unity government in 1984 saw Sharon being appointed as Minister of
Trade and Industry, a position he held until 1990. From 1990-1992, he
served as Minister of Construction and Housing and Chairman of the
Ministerial Committee on Immigration and Absorption. This post
enabled him to continue as the leading sponsor of the massive
expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied territories.
Following the fall of the Soviet Union and the waves of Jewish
immigration from Russia, he initiated and carried out a program to
absorb the immigrants throughout the country, including the
      construction of 144,000

During his postings in the Likud governments from 1977 to 1992,
Sharon had not only been the "rabbi" of the Gush Emunim and Kach
Movement, the Jewish underground terrorist organizations. He also
played a pivotal role in the creation of Hamas, the Palestinian
Islamist group, which was formally founded in 1988. Under the Israeli
military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, an estimated
800 "licenses" were handed out to Palestinians, to create schools,
infirmaries, food kitchens, and other social service programs. Sharon
made sure that most of these licenses were given to Islamists, many
of whom would be Hamas founders, as a way of creating a parallel
structure to eventually supplant the power of the PLO inside the
      occupied territories.

When Rabin was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1992, the former
Sharon ally in the war on the Palestinians had the courage to admit
that his underlying assumptions were wrong, and would lead to the
destruction of Israel. He entered into secret peace talks with
Arafat, which culminated in the August 1993 signing of the Oslo Peace
Accords, in the presence of U.S. President William Clinton at the
White House. With this notable diplomatic initiative, the first
Palestinian intifada that had begun on 9 December 1987 also ended.
However, Sharon declared war on the Oslo Accords and on Prime
Minister Rabin. The entire "Land-scam" gang joined Sharon in
      assailing the peace initiative.

Sharon rushed to the United States and embarked on a nationwide tour
on Nov. 14, 1993, in which he declared that the 150,000 Jewish
settlers in West Bank and Gaza were the "only barrier to a
Palestinian state." Sharon was accompanied, throughout the tour, by
Yechial Leiter, a leader of the Jewish Defense League (JDL) in the
West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba. While in the United States,
Sharon raised millions of dollars for the Kiryat Arba "resistance"
movement. Sharon's fundraising paid off. On Sept. 28, 2000. Sharon
was accompanied by more than 1,000 Israeli troops and paramilitary
police. It was a flagrant provocation, an assertion of Israeli
permanent control over the sacred sites of Islam, the Dome of
the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. With that visit, Sharon

Another event that escalated the crisis further was the assassination
of Abu Ali Mustafa, head of the leftist PFLP - one of the key
constituents of the PLO. In a targeted killing the Israelis
eliminated him by firing two missiles into his office in Ramallah on
27 August 2001. Shortly afterwards, on 17 October 2001, Rehavam
Zeevi - the most right-wing minister of the Israeli cabinet - was
assassinated for which the Israelis held the PFLP responsible.
Zeevi's assassination could not have been the reason for Israel to
step up its current offensive. Nearly two weeks earlier on 5 October
2001, in the aftermath of the 11 September events, Sharon had already
sent in tanks and troops into areas that had been h

The round of terror unleashed by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) at
the behest of Sharon in the town of Jenin and elsewhere in West Bank
and Gaza during March-April 2002 only revives the bitter memories of
the massacres at Sabra and Shatila. The fact that Israel has refused
to permit the UN Fact Finding Mission from visiting the area is ample
proof that it was desperate to cover up its despicable acts at Jenin.
In the course of the past two years, violent confrontations have left
over 1500 dead and nearly 20,000 thousand wounded - many of them
permanently disabled - including hundreds of children. Predictably,
most of the casualties are Palestinians.

Sharon and his backers are intent on depriving the Palestinians of
all their land through force and subterfuge. The Jewish population in
Israel has already risen to about 6,000,000 and the free flow of
Jewish immigrants meant occupation of more and more Palestinian
lands! Jewish settlers are occupying West Bank and Gaza Strip (i.e.,
whatever is left of the land ostensibly allocated to the Palestinians
under the UN Partition Plan of 1947) at an alarming rate. This
precisely is the issue that is adding fuel to the fire. Sharon,
however, thought it was the opportune movement to consolidate his
power. After calling early elections to the 16th Knesset, which were
held on 28 January 2003, the triumphant Sharon formed his new
      government on

To back up his misdeeds and to mislead the rest of the world, a
so-called "Road Map" was released on 30 April 2003 at the initiative
of the US Administration. But it is essentially nothing but a
circular road-map for driving the Palestinians around in circles!
That it is so can be easily discerned from the fact that Sharon has
not budged an inch from his publicly stated position which was dubbed
as the "Six Red Lines for Peace".

In a statement, which was published in the Jerusalem Post News, 21
      July 2000, he said:

"I propose six red lines which can serve as a basis for broad
national consensus, strengthen Israel's position, and enable us to
reach a better and more secure agreement:

      1. Greater Jerusalem, united and undivided, must be the eternal
capital of Israel and under full Israeli sovereignty. The question of
Jerusalem should not remain open, as it may become the time bomb for
      the next conflict.

      2. Israel will retain under its full control sufficiently wide
security zones - in both the East and the West. The Jordan
Valley...will be the eastern security zone of Israel....Israel will
maintain contiguous presence and control of the entire valley up to
the Jordan River, including the border passes. The western security
zone will include the line of hills commanding the coastal plain and
controlling Israel's vital underground water sources. Strategic
routes will be retained under Israel's control.

      3. Jewish towns, villages and communities in Judea, Samaria [West
Bank] and Gaza, as well as access roads leading to them, including
sufficient security margins along them, will remain under full
      Israeli control.

      4. The solution to the problem of Palestinian refugees from 1948-1967
will be based on their resettlement and rehabilitation in the places
where they live today (Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, etc.) Israel does not
accept under any circumstances the Palestinian demand for the right
of return. Israel bears no moral or economic responsibility for the
      refugees' predicament.

      5. As a vital existential need, Israel must continue to control the
underground fresh water aquifers in western Samaria, which provide a
major portion of Israel's water. The Palestinians are obligated to
prevent contamination of Israel's water resources.

      6. Security arrangements: All the territories under control of the
Palestinian Authority will be demilitarized. The Palestinians will
not have an army; only a police force. Israel will maintain complete
control of the whole air space over Judea, Samaria and Gaza."

The intransigent stand of Sharon cannot be a basis for any serious
negotiations for a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestine

It is very obvious that as long as he remains in power he will do
everything within his means to sabotage the peace process. Those who
condone his bloody actions and bestow honour on him are doing so only
for serving their narrow political ends. Promoting better relations
with the people of Israel is one thing but trying to white-wash the
heinous crimes of Ariel Sharon, and those of the fascist Likud Party
      he represents, is quite another.
