Subject: [development-gender] Report: Issues Concerning Prostitution, India
        Reply-to: development-gender-owner@yahoogroups.com

        Issues Concerning Prostitution

Prostitution though considered the oldest profession, is in reality
the oldest oppression of woman kind. Over the years the NCW has
attempted to profile issues concerning prostitution and has made
efforts to identify possible relief and rehabilitation measures for
        the affected women and children.

Members of the Commission have visited the concentration areas
related to prostitution in different parts of the country. The
objective has been to have first hand information about trafficking
and commercial sexual exploitation of women and children. Several
workshops and public hearings were also arrange for the purpose. The
Commission has met over one lakh prostitutes and over two lakh
children who are unfortunately associated with the trade.

The Commission sponsored 10 studies on child prostitution in States
like Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan,
Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal together
information about the peculiar trades associated with the
exploitation of children in different region.

A national consultation on sexual exploitation of children was
organised by NCW in Goa on 23-24 July, 1997. Meeting were also
arranged to prepare the draft of the SAARC Convention on Preventing
and Combating trafficking in Women and Children for Prostitution.

        Key Observations :

Women in Prostitution perceive their children as the only true symbol
        of love and trust.

In rehabilitation schemes priority should be given women over 30
years of age since they have been discarded by clients and suffer
        several ailments.

Unethical and illegal practice of vaccine and drug trials for AIDS on
        women in prostitution.

Bare civic rights and amenities such as ration cards, pattas for
homes, and the right to photo identity cards are not provided to
        women involved in this profession.

Children of prostitutes refused admission due to their inability to
        give their father's/guardian's name

Public Health services virtually beyond their access due to
discriminatory attitude of health professionals. Prostitutes are
viewed reservoir of infections and epidemics
