RE: [FJGRailroad] FJ&G sale to DO
- Yes. Do you ever get to Albany?
Early in 1974. Very simply put: The FJ&G (3rd company) turned out the light
and closed the door effectively Dec. 31, 1973. A group of local businessmen
had formed a company which took over the property and found DO to operate
it. The DO acquired the property using the name Montrose RR then merged the
two entities with the FJ&G name surviving. DO was a holding company and
never operated the railroads so far as I know. The name and charter of the
Fonda, Johnstown and Gloversville survived the abandonment. The charter was
amended changing the name of the company to Syracuse, Binghamton and New
York when DO acquired the north end of the former DL&W into Syracuse. The
story of the transfer and the people involved is interesting. I may have
put something more detailed on this in an earlier missive to the group.
