From the Bob Bedford clipping file:

      October 2, 1893 - A RUNAWAY CAR - Electric Car #1, a big compartment
car which plys between Johnstown and Fonda ran away on North Perry
Street this morning at about six o'clock as the car was enroute from
the carhouse to be placed on the Water Street line. When in the
vicinity of the Churchill house which is located just north of the
Fairgrounds, the motorman applied the brakes but they refused to
work. Between that point and the junction of Washington and Perry
Streets there is a considerable down grade and between these two
points the car sped at a rapid rate. It gained such speed that the
car was carried up the hill from Washington Street until it reached
Peck's grocery store. At this point it stopped and started down the
hill again and ran out as far as Beaver Street. It then started
again on a return up North Perry Street, but with less speed than on
the first trip. It continued as far as the stone arch when the rate
of the grade and the weight of the car forced it to a stop again. By
the time it started down again, some person with presence of mind
secured some large blocks and when the speed of the car had been
lessened by the grade near the old car stable, the wheels were
blokced and the car stopped. The only damage done was the breaking
      of a gear wheel.
