Trolley Line - Dispatching
- Movements were authorized by timetable, train orders issued by the division superintendent's office. Special intructions included designation of tracks, time intervals between turnouts on single track. In Amsterdam and Gloversville, on the single track local lines, the time intervals combined with directed visual instructions applied. Amsterdam had a number of "rules" regarding right of way which is to be expected considering the number of points where different lines intersected. Block signals were employed on all lines outside the cities and in Johnstown from East Main street south.
Movements on the main tracks between the major cities were conducted in the same manner as would be expected on any steam railroad; all covered in the rule book. Block signals merely indicated whether a track segment was occupied. They conveyed no authority for movement.
