I wrote AQ yesterday asking about AQ and Tree, updates, etc., and
received an informative reply. Here is an extract:

"Ancestral Quest is constantly being updated to be compatible with new
FamilySearch / Family Tree. But let me explain a little bit to you.

"At present, Family Tree generally works off of the "Summary Data" of
the /new FamilySearch/ database. So, on FT you are seeing that nFS
/Summary Data/ for each record. Since AQ presently works with the nFS
database, you are essentially working with Family Tree. And now, in
Ancestral Quest 14, there is the ability to set the Summary Data in nFS.
So, you are choosing which data from nFS to place into the Family Tree
database, which is a great capability to get ready for when they finally
"pull the plug" on new FamilySearch."

It is a long message with a graphic. Let me know if you would like a
copy and I will forward it to you.

        Lois,
I don't see your private email addreess in your message so am writing to the group. I would like a copy of the message you received from AQ. I use AQ to download information from FS/FT and sometimes see a difference between what I download and what I see in FT. Your message may help me work around that. It looks like a lot of things are waiting for them to pull the plug on NFS.
        Thanks

May also want to check your AQ version, the latest one is 14.00.9 which supposedly now works with FT.  But that is not clear in their info.

only 3 products certified for use in Family Tree; Roots Magic, BrowseHero,
and FamilyHero. At Roots Tech, we were told that any company that wants to
be certified for Family Tree has until August to become certified. After
August any company that is not certified will be locked out. I also spoke
to Gaylon Findley about a release of the update of Ancestral Quest and he
said they are working on it and gave me the Version 14 spiel. Version 14
still only works with nFS and changes the summary page. This is only a
work around for nFS and does not qualify for Family Tree certification. So
            we are still waiting.

Yes, it may be going into nFS but the data shows up in FS. I have been
doing it with AQ since we started testing the bets FS without any problem.
This will work until they disconnect nFS but by that time AQ should be
                      ready to sync with FS.

                            Terry,

I am not a bit worried about AQ either. I was a beta tester when they
started interfacing with nFS and they have been in the forefront all the
way. In his message Paul Johnson explained that there were certain
elements related to source info that were just released and he assured
me that they were jumping on it. He hinted at some great enhancements.
I expect an update very soon.

Incline Software wrote PAF, so they have been working with FS for a
                            long time.

tri-stake youth conference this summer. There is no transportation
available and so all of the kids (700 each session and there are 2
sessions) have to stay on the NAU campus here in Flagstaff. We have a
cemetery right off campus, but I believe the youth in the past have
cataloged the cemetery. They would like to have them do a 2 hours service
project and wondered if I had any ideas. There is no way to put 700 kids on
computers at once and I doubt that they could even find enough for 1/3 of
those. Does anyone have any super ideas or can send me to a place where
others may have done a huge project with youth? Thanks. Rosemary

Several cemeteries right in and around Jackksonville have been photographed at least partially by users of the BillionGraves app, and many of the results are already on FamilySearch.  They host an index, and have a clickthrough to see the image on BillionGraves.

Have even heard that if for any reason the company and site goes down, FamilySearch will have a copy of the index to still show, each record in the index has the GPS location for the headstone.

Mostly US-centric for now, it has some from western Europe and Australia/NZ, and a few from Singapore (if anyone knows anyone who could help transcribe some Japanese and Chinese-language headstones, have them contact BillionGraves directly to get those done).  US/CAN records are the lions share of what they've got so far.

Thanks, Miles. I will look into that. I am terrified I will be asked to

this aren't either. I will check it out to see what is entailed. Rosemary

the graves. they thought it was a bit weird but once they started looking
at the headstones they got interested in learning more. On a good day I can
do about 200 stones per hour and have them all uploaded before I get back
                                          home to start transcribing.

Maybe a few, have them do an interview with a relative either a close one or one they will have to write.  Getting to know their ancestors helps them find who they are, which might help them understand themselves.  Search the internet for all the cemeteries in that area.  There might even be some of their family in them.  All these projects can be done at home well before the session.  You might like to have one of them speak and tell about how the project worked for them and well as others.

I was asked if I had any ideas for a family history service project for a
tri-stake youth conference this summer.
Thanks. Rosemary

Thanks for your question, it helps make the mind feel it still has some good uses.

I am forwarding this idea as well. I think they could assign this to one
person from each of the stakes and have them report what they did at the
conference. I think this is worth pursuing. Thanks, Paul.

On the BillionGraves siteelf they show what cemeteries have been photographed and to what extent.  Completion rates range from one headstone out of thousands to the entire cemetery that may have 20,000 or more stones.

FamilySearch actually went out one day and photographed in one day the entire cemetery in Murray, Utah.  They got 14,000 headstones photographed.  All should be on FamilySearch now as transcribed records with the links to the images on FamilySearch.

To see the map go to billiongraves.com, click on 'Search', then the green 'Cemetery Lookup' tab, then scroll down to the bottom to 'View Cemetery Map', click that and you'll see the world map showing where everytghing is.  Will even show what cemeteries have not been photographed yet in any given area.

The Billion graves sounds like something the youth would enjoy very much.   Most cemeteries can be found on the internet, not all so a little leg work or phone calls, etc may be needed.  Plus a great service project for anyone earning a badge in scouts.  They could work on something on this order as teams.

Thanks for your question, it helps make the mind feel it still has some good uses.

I like the billiongraves idea and the interview idea too.

A few years ago our youth did some cemetery cleanup projects. They were divided into smaller groups and worked in several area cemeteries, trimming weeds and saplings and general cleanup of rubbish that had landed there somehow. Another group recorded the inscriptions on tombstones.

An idea to go along with the interviews: If they interview older family members and write up the stories they tell about deceased loved ones, it might be appropriate to add at least some of the stories to the Photos and Stories portion of Family Tree. I don't know how the logistics would work but they certainly would have to be divided into smaller groups.

Reporting back to the group about their experiences is a great idea - maybe in a testimony meeting or something more structured.

                                                        Just my 2 cents fwiw.

Do local funeral homes, courthouses and cemetery caretakes have records that you will not find if all you use is tombstones?

Several years ago my wife and I went to four cemeteries in a rural farming community north of Toronto, Ontario where her father was from.

We made appointments with the cemetery caretakes who opened their Interment books up to us. We found that while there may only be two stones on the surface there are often eight people buried in the plot. Six years later we are still building upon the records which were in the books that were opened for us.

Why limit your search to just the stones? Find out if the cemetery Interment record books are available for viewing or microfilming.
