Bio-Oil Could Replace Petroleum in Asphalt - Researchers from Iowa State University have come up with a bio-oil made from corn stalks, wood waste, and other bio-mass that could one day replace oil in asphalt. The bio-oil is made when biomass is superheated in an oxygen-free area. It is also a money saver because it is easier to pave with bio-asphalt, and it doesn’t have to be heated as high to be used. Solar school dedicated - We offer our congratulations to our associate, Jim Dunn, who's hard work over five years has finally materialized in a 100 kW photovoltaic system at Bancroft School in Massechussets. Dunn serves as president of Future Solar Systems of Millbury, which designed, installed and secured investors for the project, will save the school about $8,000 to $10,000 annually in energy costs. Largest tidal power device unveiled - A device thought to be the largest tidal turbine of its type to be built in the world has been described by its developer as "simple and robust". The AK1000 by Atlantis Resources stands 22.5m (73ft) tall and weighs 1,300 tonnes and is capable of generating 1 megawatt. Its blades, turning at six to eight revolutions per minute pose no threat to marine life. (BBC; Aug. 12 2010)

Review: The Scientist by Zack LeBeau - The Scientist follows a brilliant physicist, Dr. Marcus Ryan (Bill Sage), who anguishes over the tragic death of his wife and daughter while secretly constructing a mysterious energy generator in his basement. The multi-dimensional energy unleashed by the machine triggers a series of events that propels Ryan toward a higher level of consciousness. (PESWiki; Oct. 8, 2010)

Cleanair system said to cut energy costs by up to 25 percent - If only the air already in buildings could be cleaned up and reused, far less energy would be used on continuously conditioning fresh air, heating it or cooling it. University of Copenhagen’s Prof. Matthew Johnson's patented Cleanair system involves a process called Photochemical Air Purification, which incorporates ultraviolet light and photochemical reactions similar to those that occur in the Earth’s atmosphere. Interview with Dave about Freddy's water fuel cell powering his truck - David Seigler describes his experience with his Dodge 2004 pickup truck apparently running on nothing but water via a hydroxy unit installed by his friend, Fred Wells. As far as he could best determine, it was a genuine system. (PESN; Oct. 7, 2010)

Human waste power plant goes online in the UK - Brotish Gas has gone online with a sewage-to-biomethane plant that converts the treated sewage of 14 million Thames Water customers into clean, green gas and is pumping that gas into people's homes. Biomethane is created when bacteria known as anaerobic digesters break down organic material such as human or animal waste, food and household waste to produce a thick, odorless waste plus methane. Solar Winds Could Provide 100 Billion Times Earth’s Energy Needs - Researchers from Washington State University have published a paper in the International Journal of Astrobiology stating that energy from solar winds could replace conventional forms of renewable energy produced on Earth such as solar, wind and biofuel power; theorizing that a giant solar sail 5,220 miles (8,400 km) wide, designed to harness solar winds, could generate 1 billion gigawatts. Hatem Magnetic Cogging Device Open Source Project - Several people are claiming that they have achieved more energy out than in with a system in which a motor drives one magnet disc that propels a second, non-touching magnet disc that drives an alternator, introducing nearly twice as much power as was input. Or is it a matter of measurement error? (PESWiki; Oct. 5, 2010)

Worlds Largest Solar Plant Now In Ontario, Canada - Canada may not be the first place you would guess to have the world’s largest photovoltaic facility. However, the Canadian firm Enbridge Inc. and Arizona-based First Solar Inc.'s 80-megawatt Sarnia Solar Project is now the largest operational PV plant in the world. With 1.3 million modules spread over 950 acres of land, the project has the potential to supply the energy needs of up to 12,800 households. (Inhabitat: Oct. 1, 2010)

Rube Goldberg and the Electrification of America - Before electricity, basically every factory had to run a bit like a Rube Goldberg machine, transmitting power from a water wheel or a steam engine to the machines of a manufactory. But with the development of electric turbines and motors the public believed engineers were tapping mysterious, invisible forces with almost supernatural powers for mischief.
