Water (H20) is our 21th Century fuel - Hollywood films such as "Chain Reaction" and "The Saint" have depicted story lines built around the idea of a revolutionary power source arrived at through water H20, becoming freely available for all to use around the Globe. What if that Hollywood story line turned out to be closer to the truth and rather than being a work of fiction it would change the real world we live in forever. (Carbon Good Guys)
      • Hydrogen / Superconductors

For Future Superconductors, A Little Bit Of Lithium May Do Hydrogen A Lot Of Good - Scientists have long believed that metallic hydrogen may prove to be a high temperature superconductor, but have been unsuccessful in achieving that state. A team from Cornell and NY State University at Stony Brook have announced a theoretical study that predicts the metallization of hydrogen-rich mixtures at significantly lower pressures by adding small amounts of lithium to hydrogen. • Conspiracy

Pocket spy: Will your smartphone rat you out? - Many cell phones nowadays record text messages, photos, travel routes, and other private information, even if you "delete" it -- all retrievable by police forensic machines with plug-and-play capabilities. The U.S. military’s battle to wean itself off oil - Increasingly, the military it seeking out self-sustainable energy solutions to solve their supply line problems. For them, renewable energy is not an environmental consideration but a tactical necessity—a matter of life and death, of victory or defeat. (Grist; Oct. 14, 2009) [Politicizing and sequestering renewable energy to maintain tactical advantage of one side is not a good thing for the people and gives an advantage to the police state. • Magnetism > Monopoles

'Magnetic electricity' discovered - Researchers have discovered a magnetic equivalent to electricity: single magnetic charges that can behave and interact like electrical ones. The work is the first to make use of the magnetic monopoles that exist in special crystals known as spin ice. The phenomenon, dubbed "magnetricity", could be used in magnetic storage or in computing. (BBC News; Oct. 14, 2009)
      • Conspiracy / Gird

From Smart Grid to Big Brother? - The main stated benefits are: A more efficient use of energy, and a higher capacity to handle intermittent renewable power sources. But there is another important issue that gets shoved under the rug: Privacy. These smart meters and appliances will be sending lots of data to power companies. (TreeHugger; Oct. 14, 2009)

Hydraulic Storage using Coastal Salt Domes - Hydraulic and air-pressure based power stations respond more easily to sudden and extreme fluctuations in demand for power. Salt domes that are located very deep in the earth's bedrock and that measure several miles in vertical height by up to a mile in diameter would be suitable to store pressurized natural gas or compressed air. Breakthrough Biodiesel Process Now Running At Commercial Scale - Ever Cat opened the doors to it’s new biodiesel facility in rural Minesota on Sept. 28, capable of making biodiesel in mere seconds from start to finish, reducing costs by half the price of other biodiesel, producing no waste, using no chemical reactants, and using any animal fat or vegetable oil as a feedstock. • Magnetism

Scientist Develops Programmable Magnets - Researcher and inventor Larry Fullerton of Correlated Magnetics has developed a process to "program" magnets so that they will attract or repel only another specifically programmed magnet. The process works by changing materials at the molecular level. Many potentially useful applications never before possible with conventional magnets. (Huntsville Times; Oct. 5, 2009 )
      • Alt Fuels > Biofuel > Algae

Commercial green fuel from algae still as much as a decade away - Breakthroughs are still needed in finding the right strain of algae among thousands of species that will produce high yields; designing systems where the desired algae can multiply and other species don't invade and disrupt the process; and extracting its oils without degrading other parts of the algae that can be made into side products and sold as well. Junipers are great for renewable biomass - You can selectively and sustainably harvest some of a Juniper via the ancient practice of 'decoupage' in which the major part of a tree is removed while leaving one major, healthy limb coming from near the base of the tree, which will grow into a new trunk. Juniper biomass is rich in oil and can be 'slow roasted' by pyrolysis into syngas and biochar. (PESWiki; Oct. 12, 2009)
      • EVs

All-Electric Freight Train Makes Debut in Pennsylvania - Norfolk Southern unveiled a prototype all-electric, 1,500 horsepower locomotive that gets its power from 1,080 12-volt lead-acid batteries, the same kind found under the hoods of most cars. It includes a brake regeneration system. 'Doesn't say what it does for a jump start. (Gas 2.0; Oct. 8, 2009)
