The Fire Department Recruiting and Diversity (FDRD) Group offers fire departments the opportunity to share benchmarks, network, seek advice and generally to discuss how to recruit the highest quality people nationally. Fire departments in the United States have historically and traditionally been made up demographically of white males. However, most local governments have appropriately established that a more diverse workforce that includes people of different cultures, races and genders are more beneficial both to the community as well as to the creativity and capability of the organization to accomplish its mission. Fire departments are, now more then ever before becoming more competitive for qualified and diverse members of their community. They are also doing more to provide opportunities to diverse members of their community through training and understanding of the career and occupation of firefighter, paramedic, etc.
