TODAY IN HISTORY - 1954 -- US - CIA supplies & directs forces in overthrow
of democracy in Guatemala, destroying the constitutionally elected
government of Jacabo Arbenz Guzman when it nationalizes United Fruit Co.
property. Decades of government-sponsored genocide against Guatemalan
      Indians follow.

Just some of the high points for today:

We'll just call this one "The Madness of King George".

The Bush boys' habit of bullying the rest of the world is written up by by
Ian Williams at Foreign Policy in Focus, and Ed Vulliamy in The Observer,
UK: "this is an epicentre of power, oil capital of the Western world and
the most industrialised corner of the United States. It is also the capital
of a power machine perfected in Texas, elevated to rule the nation and now
      unchallenged across the planet."

David Krieger in Counterpunch says "Farewell to the ABM Treaty" -
"Without a vote of the United States Congress and over the objections of
Russia and most US allies, George W. Bush has unilaterally withdrawn the US
from the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty, rendering it void. His
withdrawal from this solemn treaty obligation became effective June 13,
2002. Bush's action is being challenged in US federal court by 32 members
of Congress, led by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) and Senator Russell
Feingold (D-WI). Since becoming president, Bush has waged a campaign
against international law. Withdrawal from the ABM Treaty is but one of a
series of assaults he has made, including pulling out of the Kyoto Accords
on Climate Change, withdrawal of the US from the treaty creating an
International Criminal Court, opposing a Protocol to the Biological Weapons
Convention that would allow for inspections and verification, and failing
to fulfill US obligations related to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty."

"Some of his minor screw-ups included his declaration on day two of his
trip that he intended to "securitize" Russia's dismantled nuclear weapons.
Other blunders were a bit more profound as exemplified by a video clip
widely played in Europe that shows the President of the United States
spitting out his gum into his hand before signing the "historic" Treaty of
      Moscow." Yellowtimes.org

Arianna Huffington writes "In Return for Wall Street Bribes, House
Republicans Stopped Investigating Wall Street Scandals".

From The Guardian: "UK anti-terrorist officials alarmed at US tactics -
Senior British officials responsible for countering al-Qaida terrorism are
becoming increasingly concerned about the Bush administration's handling of
the problem. They say that imprecise or exaggerated warnings of attacks
merely serve to encourage panic, and give gratuitous propaganda victories
      to the terrorists."

Judge Refuses to Force Nevada to Give Water to Yucca Mountain - A judge is
refusing to make Nevada turn on the water tap for the federal government at
the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump site. KVBC in Las Vegas

False START- The Great Nuclear Swindle in Moscow - "The recent Moscow
START Treaty is a step backward, not forward, from 1997 - CAPE BRETON,
CANADA-The fanfare accompanying Presidents Bush and Putin¹s signing in
Moscow of the May 24th US-Russia treaty on nuclear arms has been a public
relations triumph for both governments. It¹s also been an exercise in
oversell, false claims and misinformation from a gullible, uninformed
press. The public perception is that the numbers of nuclear weapons are
about to come tumbling down to insignificant levels, "liquidating" the
legacy of the Cold War at a stroke and ushering in an era of free-trading
      peace, harmony and prosperity."

      S.F. attorney: Bush allowed 9/11 - $7 BILLION lawsuit filed - Stanley
Hilton now figures his case is stronger because of a coalition of
attorneys, victims' families and bipartisan legislators who gathered in
Washington on Monday to condemn the government's lack of action in
preventing the Sept. 11 attacks. Hilton is the San Francisco attorney who
filed a $7 billion lawsuit in U.S. District Court on June 3 against
President Bush and other government officials for "allowing" the terrorist
attacks to occur. Among Hilton's allegations: Bush conspired to create the
Sept. 11 attacks for his own political gain and has been using Osama bin
Laden as a scapegoat. San Francisco Examiner

An Imperial Democracy - by Mumia Abu-Jamal - There is something surreal
about George W. Bush crowing to the world about "democracy," "freedom," and
building a system "where every vote counts" in socialist Cuba

Summary of Genetically Engineered Food Legislation - US Rep.Kucinich has
introduced the "Genetically Engineered Food Safety Act of 2000".

Complaint for Declaratory Relief concerning termination of the
Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty - suit filed against Bush by Kucinich and
      dozens of congressmen.

Democrats.com Launches 'BuckStopsThere.com' To Expose ALL Top Officials
Who Let 911 Happen - September 11 was the worst terrorist attack in
American history, resulting in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people. The first
duty of our President is to defend and protect America. But in the weeks
leading up to September 11, George W. Bush and his top officials failed to
take numerous precautions that could have stopped 911. And on 911 itself,
Bush failed to respond in real time to the unfolding events.
"I don't believe any longer that it's a matter of connecting the dots. I
think they had a veritable blueprint and we want to know why they didn't
act on it." - Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA), 6/6/02
"Of course President Bush knew about the impending attacks on America. He
did nothing to warn the American people because he needed this war on
terrorism. His daddy had Saddam and he needed Osama. His presidency was
going nowhere. He wasn't elected by the American people, but placed into
the Oval Office by the conservative supreme court. The economy was sliding
into the usual Republican pits and he needed something on which to hang his
presidency... This guy is a joke. What is sleazy and contemptible is the
President of the United States not telling the American people what he
knows for political gain." - Air Force Lt. Col. Steve Butler, who was
suspended after publishing this letter in the Monterey Herald on 5/26/02.
