- Floridians Brace for Monster Storm Frances

Administration shows a satellite image of Hurricane Frances taken at
10:45 a.m. EDT on September 2, 2004, passing over the Bahamas and
with the state of Florida on the horizon (top), its forecast target.
The storm is packing dangerous and destructive winds of 145 miles
per hour with higher gusts. The eye of the hurricane can be seen
passing north of Haiti and the Dominican Republic (lower C) and
northeast of Cuba, at left. Nearly 900,000 Floridians were urged to
leave their homes and the number was sure to rise as powerful
Hurricane Frances roared toward the crowded southeast U.S. coast.
