      What is that white-flowering tree along Glendale Boulevard? It's Pyrus kawakamii, the Evergreen Pear. It's not really evergreen, except in the warmest winters, but it's more evergreen than the edible pear, which we can't grow here. This is an especially good year for them--you can find a good year about 1 year in 5. As they get older, they develop black, furrowed trunks. It's a good small tree for the average yard, and quite drought tolerant once established.
