If i understand your question and assume your log file is access log.
I created a physical file to keep log on info.(last log on timestamp and
current logon timestamp and user id.).When the user first log on,no record
is in the file, so a welcome message is shown.subsequence logon, the last
logon time and date was shown.Each logon,in the PF, the current logon time
is moved to last logon time before it is updated.
This subroutine is processed in the main page provided a named cookie say
"logged=Y" is not found.This is to prevent the sub-routine being processed
each time you come back to the main page. FYI,the cookie without expires
keyword valid until the browser is destroyed.
I'm not sure wheather it is a correct way or not but it works.
